.17 hmr Accuracy help

I got a savage .17 93r17 stainless bull barrel thumb hole stock with a mueller 4-14x40 scope. Free floated barrel. I'm shooting 1 in. groups at 100yds. I'm getting my ass cut every week by a Marlin shooting groups at 5/8 in. We shoot for bullseye, grouping only come in effect when 2 shoots tie. I need to figure out how to get some better accuracy out of this rifle. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

The Savages I've shot like the 17 grain TNTs the best. As with shooting centerfire ammo with copper jackets, it needs to be cleaned like a centerfire. They've also had to have a couple hundred rounds through them before the groups started to shrink.

Check the bedding and re-bed if needed. Get trigger pull down to 1 1/2 lb for target work. Try all brands of ammo for best groups. If none of that works, then it may be cheaper to sell and look at a CZ, Marlin or Anschutz. You may try a different scope also to see if yours may not hold zero or parallax as well as expected. A CZ with a Lilja barrel is usually a shooting machine. Just places to look, may work and may not. .17 HMR's usually shoot well, but still vary some from gun to gun. Since no match ammo is available - it can be luck of the draw in the gun you buy in how well it shoots.

Good Luck

The savage I had would only shoot the 20 gr bullets. The 17 's would be 1"- 1.75" @ 100 yds. Like others have said my cz 452 varmint has shot better groups than my savage ever did.

I've rebedded stock. Ordered a rifle basix trigger over the weekend should be here Thursday. If that doesn't work I'm looking at leupold v3 fixed x25 scope. If that doesn't work how does the cz compare with valqusrtsen. Thanks for the help.

Same here.
Have a 93r17 TR and it'll shoot 20gr Gamepoints much more consistently than any flavor of 17gr poly tip ammo...
The Rifle Basix upgrade is worth it, IMHO. Just can't like that accu-crap-trigger...

I'd look at ammo first. My 17 [CZ 455] shows best accuracy with the CCI A17 ammo. I have the Rifle Basix trigger in mine as well.. FWIW, mine started life as a 22 MAG. When ammo got real scarce I bought a 17 barrel and switched it to 17 HMR, which took all of 5 minutes.

With the wood stock you will probably need pillars to minimise torque variability. A heavier bottom metal is also available as a replacement for the standard sheet metal that comes with the rifle.

Welcome to the world of the rimfire. Test as many styles (brands) and lot #'s as needed to find what shoots the best in your rifle.... Then buy ALL you can get your hands on.

what about varying the tightness of the two screws holding the action to the stock? I don't own a torque wrench, but I've read about others playing around with different pressure on the screws. I didn't see another post mentioning this, so I thought I would.

I have a Savage 93r17, but blue with plain stock (and left handed). I've only ever shot 17gr Hornady vmax. I'm not really a gun tweaker, but I ended up shooting mostly 5 shots inside a nickle @ 100 yards. And sometimes they would come down to inside a dime.

I've heard that others have experimented with various ammo, and it makes a difference. But with the performance I get, I'm not changing.

CMG 73 you can get the stock savage trigger pull down to a pound and under...clip the spring... try ...clip the spring...try...loose the accutrigger blade if yours hopefully has one... mine shoots Hornady V max 17 gr the best...playing with the bottom screw tension may help..especially the front one...Neil

If you haven't tried all the ammo out there, I'd surely start there. I put a Jard trgger in my Savage and did a skim bed on the action. I also put a top-line scope on it Each of these helped a little. Biggest factor was ammo though. My Savage favors the 17 V-Max by Hornady best, followed by Winchester with the V-Max. My Volquartson likes the Hornady UNLEADED NTX 15 gran the best, followed by the 15 V-Max leaded. The CCI's print 2" or more in both guns. I tried to give the CCI's away to some of my other squirrel hunting buddies and there were no takers. Just laughs.

i shoot a savage 93 bull barrel. 17hmr with a 12x burris.mine is one of the first made.measure rim thickness on ammo.make sure rifle is clean if does not help have other you shoot with try it out.he dont get better groups get a cz,steve

My savage .17 93r17 is a squirrel killing dude! If one sits still for just five seconds......his head is mush!! ;D

My wife is shooting her Savage .17HMR BTVLSS with CCI TNT ammo into .35" to .55" 5 shot groups at 100 yards. this has the thumb hole Boyd's stock with the stainless barrel. the only mods we did were the Apache trigger mod (pull weight cut in half) and the DIP bottom metal. we tried Hornady and CCI VMax, FMJ, and CCI A17 ammo. then there was the CCI TNT ammo. it was hands down, the most consistently accurate.
