17 fireball vs 17 Remington

I looked on shooting bot few weeks ago and 17 Remington was available several places, problem with 17 Remington or fireball only available with 20gr bullets that ive seen.
If you have any or want a 17 or 20 cal of any kind you better reload.
Roger that. Unfortunately, Mr. Nagel has passed away and Mr. Kindler is no longer in the bullet making business. They were the most accurate and consistent bullets for the .17FB. The only thing coming close in my rifles is the Berger 25s. They performed well on a recent trip to RSA, killing two springbok and ten springhares on two night hunts.

AMEN to that, Brother

As a wise fellow told me once, (30 some years ago to boot), there is no savings in reloading, it just lets you shoot more.
I see folks drop1-2k on hand loading gear and equipment, then after a year or two try to tell me how much money they saved.
I did my own test some years back on the 17’s and 20’s. I have various flavors of each.
The 221 parent case I used because I had some various powders that would work in them that was sitting idle. The bigger cases I built for speed.
Yes, in the back of my mind I kept in mind some thoughts on cost per round. Then when things went crazy, I just said F it and go on and pay up. I won’t argue the savings much, as I spend more in food and gas from point A to point B.
Going with a bigger case, you have the opportunity to load down, where as the smaller case will only hold so much.

I had a 17 Remington and it’s a great round but even with 30 grain bullets past 200 yards it’s lacking. Had a 204 for a while good gun but there are much better options for coyotes.

If you reload go with a 6x45 if you don’t go with a standard 223. If you build with an 8 twist you can shoot 75s if you want and there is a lot of factory ammo out there.

That is simply not true, my 17 badger i can reload cheaper than I can buy 17hmr ammo and have a gun that carries out farther its why I own 4 now and no 17hmr.
I'm 80.00 into 500 rounds in my 17 Badgers, 17 hmr ammo is about 170.00 for 500

They certainly have made it no fun to find 17 HMR ammo near me and finding either 17FB or 17 REM is really rare.
Not to derail the OP's thread, but what brass are you using to make your 17 Badger?

I used to use Rem 30 carbine, the last couple hundred I made were LC 30 carbine.
Can't remember exactly but ive got in the neighborhood of 800 cases

I started shooting 17HMR when the ammo was 7.95 for 50 when it went over 10.00 sold the rifle and bought another 527 and had the 4th badger built.
Last time I shot a 17hmr I shot 1500 rounds in less than 2 days in phenomenal rat patch.
At that time the Badger was running me 60.00 for 500 rounds and the hmr 80.00 so went the hmr went up over 100.00 for 500.00 I quite shooting one.

Is that with current, today prices on powder, primer, brass and bullets?
I don’t see that price (.16) per round when primers are .08-.10, bullets at .15-.20, brass@.25- .30, then add powder too.
It is replacement cost.

Brass is a 1 time deal can easily get 20 reloads on brass. No its not today's prices ive got 32lbs of AA2200 the last 8 lb I bought was 180.00, the others were 150.00. Ive probably got 15,000 20gr I bought from midsouth some 35.00 -500 last ones were 39.00. All my primers which are alot are 30.00- 1000.
Replacement costs are only if you need to replace them which i doudt i ever will any of my 17 or 20 stuff. Most of my brass i made was 18.00 a 100
I learned along time ago.

Sherm, like you I'm sure glad I stocked up back then. I made it a plan back in the 70's, shoot a 100 and buy for 300. The stock pile quickly added up. Now I don't worry about components, just that I live long enough to use them.

After going through the 2nd "shortage" in the 2000's I vowed never again
