17 fireball rifle

The .221 rem. Fireball has got to be one of my all time favorites cartridges so far.
Then the .20 var-targ, and the .17 fireball.

I've been messing with this frankingun for years now
I've changed just about everything multiple times to evolve to this.
Old savage model 12 action lefty
pac-nor heavy .17 rem. Fireball
I forget what trigger rifle basics or timney
Nightforce benchrest
And a new MDT chassis.
That is why I posting to show off the new Chassis haha
The only complaintis my firing pin speed.
It just seems slow and sluggish..
Any way to fix that on a savage model 12.
I have used no scientific data other then my ear..I pull trigger and gun always go bang but not like my new rifles.
A tubs speedloc firing pin for a savage would be perfect medicine if it was even a real thing.
I just put this together yesterday and haven't even shot it yet
It was shooting incredible little groups I can only assume a slight improvement, or no change in this new chassis but it feels great when I shoulder it now..
It was in a horrible choate stock..yuck!..hahaha
so how to I increase firing pin speed on a savage?

Sure the firing pin speed, thing may be addresses if the issue is real. Though it sounds like performance on paper is not lacking by much if any. This begs the question is there really a speed issue w the firing pin?

Do you feel drag w the firing pin? If so removing a few thou from the bolt ID -w- a reamer may be your answer.

By the way the 17 FB has been one of my favorites.

I had taken the bolt apart cleaned it spotless.
I have tried grease and that was not good..cleaned it out with break cleaner and oiled it all wiped it off reassembled, if I listen to any other rifle the firing pin is a nice snap..this sounds like it's dragging or some how the spring lost its springyness..
I noticed it once I replaced my trigger and it wasn't my main focus.
The target says the rifle is happy..but if I can speed up lock time maybe it will help me and my shaking old body..
I will look into the EGW spring.. maybe I'm spoiled with my other rifles..but this old savage is right on the verg of becoming something special. I will shoot for a very long time ..love it now..the fact I can change barrels so easily and be back up and running saves alot of money, and from a quick web search most custom gun barrel companies offer ready to go pre-fit savage barrels..may be not so flashy with all sorts of new guns..
But I'd rather spend money on barrels and reloading components then guns..

Does any one make a speedy firing pin for savage

I would love to have a 17 fireball built. Almost did it last year. I was just reading about ejector issues, needing it timmed right for the small cases. Id like to have it as a repeater not a single shot.

Well I'm also working on the feeding issue it's close! the savage model 12 Lefty dropped right in nicely with a fat pac-nor barrel with extra room.
17 fireball from AI polymer 223 10rd mags.
I know MTD says to use the metal magazine to adjust feed lips. And it will work
But I have a few 223 polymer ones that have been kicking around ..if I can get them to function it will save me some money.
The cartridge is running into the back of the barrel instead of into the chamber then pops off the bolt..it should be a fun challenge..I think all I need to do is adjust the bump on the follower in the magazine and it will feed...
I have done a search and lots of folks ask about this same topic , but I don't see anyone respond who has made a polymer mag work..
I believe the bump in the follower
Needs to be higher

You guys!...im dancing a jig you won't believe this..
I hope everyone sees this video please disregard the broken thumb..im sensitive about my bump..hahaha
Anyway old Savage model 12 Lefty single shot
Heavy (fat) contor barrel
Standard AI polymer 10rd 223 mag
(Every thing drop in)
May 17 remington fire ball reloads C.O.A.L 1.830"
If I work the bolt fast. It works.
I made a little video as living real time proof
MDT is one amazing company and what they created is nothing short of a masterpiece..
Well maybe not that great. .but if I can run a short little cartridge..look out! that isn't something just any company can accomplish..its been tried by many. Hell remington could barely accomplish this and it's their invention..chew on that perspective for a few minutes.
I'm jaw dropping impressed

My gunsmith built a 17 fireball for a guy last year from a howa mini action. It was a nice build and cycled good he said. I have thought about that as an option just was wanting a different action.

Try a fired round.

Oh man..thanks alot for the bad juju..I didn't even think of that..hahaha..ok it obviously isn't going to cycle a fired round as it does a crunching nose dive and stops cold..
If I have a loaded round in the magazine and I operate the bolt fast it will kind of spit it out somewhat consistent
With a fired case in the chamber on an empty magazine the brass falls off the bolt and stays in the action..
Any ideas how to fix that..hahaha..look I honestly think I should just count my blessing thus far ..
You know what !..this was also with all cases push to the back of the magazine..it has one long jump to make into the chamber..maybe I need all the cases forward in the magazine to help ejection them the brass will support the outgoing brass better..in theory.
Here is an ejection video just for Piglet!..voodoo master..hahahaha
