.17 cal 30gr bullets

Todd's 30 Golds were the best in my opinion but finding them today would require a small miracle. I always thought the 25 VMax was a good readily available alternative that also needed a 9 twist. In today's world the 20 calibers have kind of taken the front seat for varmints when comparing 17s versus 20s. I always thought for 17 shooters who had a 9 twist a 30 VMax would be an incredible option. I think the 17s make a great cartridge for people concerned with saving fur. In the past Starke, Berger,Calhoon, and quite a few others made great 30 grain17 caliber bullets. Today Hornady with their 20 and 25 VMax are pretty much it for reasonably priced, readily available 17 caliber bullets. If they ever chose to make a poly tipped 17 caliber 30 grain VMax the bigger 17 shooters would be very well covered.

Way back you could buy Remington 25 grain in 500 box, very good coyote bullets. I still have some 30 gr. hand swaged Berger Bullets ! Were the best in the 17 Rem...Good luck in your search. I guess some day I'll sell my Little Sako 17 MK-4 with all the goodies...some day...

I feel Berger is responsible for the lack of good 17 bullets. A lot of small bullet makers made investments in time and dies believing Berger would support their needs. Instead they dropped sizes of jackets and made minimum buys of jackets more than most small makers could afford. I understand business But I feel Berger could have found a way to make runs of jackets for the small custom makers. In the beginning it was those small custom guys that helped Berger to grow.

Don Unmussig makes 30 grain 17 caliber bullets.

I've been shooting them for years, ever since Todd stopped making his 30 Golds.

He doesn't have a website. You need to call him.

They show some 17 caliber bullets on their website, but it looks like they are not in stock right now.

50 Cents per bullet for 17's, ouch.

I have never used 30's, always thought I would. I have a couple boxes of Kindler Gold, just hated to work up a load using up a bunch of them, then not having enough to last more than a season or two of coyotes. In the mean time the 25gr Hornady HP has done everything I need it to.
They in fact are Gold . It wouldn't take much to get them to shoot but it will break your heart when you run out. On the plus side IIRC they have 200 in the box. I often tear up when I think about where those dies wound up.
