17 BR donut

Is there a way to avoid getting donuts when forming this brass? Using new Lapua cases and sizing in 5 steps with a Redding FL bushing die with the expander removed...would it help if I trimmed to 1.530,reamer OAL case length) BEFORE sizing down? Or is the donut unavoidable? The die cams over the shellholder while forming..

Newly sized cases chamber fine. Manson cut a 10 degree radius on the reamer which accounts for the chambering ease, I suspect?

I will do that with the K&M....The donut is pretty BIG....Doesn't hurt anything-just don't like its looks...won't be seating bullets deeply enough to get into the donut....I thought trimming before sizing would shorten the neck enough to allow the sizing die bushings to reach the base of the neck and minimalize any donut effect....I'm going to try that, too....

The donut is on the inside of the case. The portion on the outside where your bushing does not reach, will not affect anything really. Also, trimming will not help, bushing is in a fixed position from the die manufacturer. I found I had to use a regular FL die to iron that part of the neck out, before neck turning, as my bushing did not reach to bottom of neck either. If you turn with it like that, you will be thinning it to much, I think. Does your bushing rattle inside the die when the die is assembled? Can you shim it down more?

Bushing does not rattle...I am going to neck ream a few and turn a few others and see if there's any difference....appreciate your help very much....

Turning the outside excess brass would be a real PITA and probably a crapshoot, at best, I'm guessing....

Neck turning brass with a K&M turner is no where near a,crap shoot) it turns necks to as close as a 10th of a thousandth, and I don't see it as a PITA to do.
Try it sometimes and you'll be converted.....
The doughnut is inside, and it does make a difference
Neck reaming will open the hole, but it will still be out of round, unlike using a outside turner.....

I suppose turning is not a PITA with a dedicated tool....

I am going to use my Sinclair to remove the buildup around the base of the neck then finish in a couple steps with the K&M....and leave the K&M set up for this rifle....

Wonder how much difference I am going to find from turned cases versus reamed ones....I'll soon find out....
