Have any of you shooters built a 17/23 SMc ? Tell me what you like or dislike about it. Also what are your powder loads you use after they have been fireformed. THANKS

No, not yet, but barrel - dies - and all that is needed is ordered thru the gunsmith. I will be using a Savage model 12 LRPV 223 right bolt & left port as the donor rifle. I talked to M.L. McPherson and he got me pointed in the right direction. It should be ready for my first trip this spring P-dogging.

The 17/23 SMc is made by fireforming a 17 Fireball to blow out a front radiused shoulder as the picture above shows.

What is the difference between a SMc and an Ackley cartridge.

Most noticeable are the case shoulder differences. The SMc cases have a "Hemi"-type shoulder or a parabolic shoulder. Whereas, the Ackley design is sharp/straight and angled at 40°. (Edit): ...forgot I had one of the 40° versions. Here's a photo comparison:

Yeah I remember reading about the SMc cartridge in TVHM several years ago. It was designed by a certain Smalley and Mic McPherson who used to write a bunch in TVHM. Good writer/tester/experimenter I thought. Lives down in SW Colo. May try and get ahold of him. I called him once years ago--nice guy. I can look those articles up in TVHM if you'd like. Send a copy to you. Let me know.

The Smc also has some ratio of bore diameter to case diameter, so you cant make every caliber because they all need different case diameters. ( As I remember from reading Varmint Hunter a few years ago)

I have a 20 smc basically a 6 br necked to 20 cal with the parabolic shoulder and it is a hell raiser. Super accurate. Technically a 5.35 smc and it loves the 40 grain bergers.
