17-222 Anybody

I have been looking into either buying or building a small caliber rifle for some time now. The 2 calibers i have been coming back to over and over are a 17 fireball or 1 of the 20 caliber tactical variations. I came across a custom rifle for sale chambered in the 17-222. It has a Shilen 1 in 9 or 8 barrel and is a tight neck chamber. The action is a single shot left port and right bolt Time precision action with a Jewell trigger. Kelbly did the barrel work and Tom of TM stock works bedded the action in a Panda thumbhole stock. Dies and prepped brass goes with it. Rifle was shot vary little and in great shape. Anyone out their shooting 1 or had 1 at one time. I wonder what kind of barrel life to exspect and if their is much data for reloading it. It seems to be a neat little caliber that would be alot of fun for shooting crows and ground hogs with. So guys what is your opinion on this. Thanks....DAN....

I had one built. Used it for fox and prairie dogs, back when the only two bullets in town were the 25 grain offerings from Hornady and Remington. It pretty much mimics a 17 Rem for performance and barrel life. Mine was a tight neck also. Luckily, the gunsmith let me use his dies to make the brass, saved me that expense. I did have to neck turn the 500 pieces though. The older Hornady book has loads for the 17 Duece.

Sounds like a quality piece put together by some of the best out there. If it suits your fancy, and with the brass and dies and included, I'd hop right on it.

I agree with everything Alf said...

Especially the fact that that rifle has an excellent pedigree.
Great brass is available and the 17-222 can do anything
that the 17 Rem can do.Mine was built on a Sako by
PO Ackley and is a vintage beauty.Someday a good gunsmith
could cut another barrel for a small base 20 cal wildcat
and you would have a great switch barrel setup too.

I have a Sako 17/222 AI that was barreled by P.O. Ackley. I have had it since before 17's were cool! My accuracy is falling off a little now and I will probably have a shilen barrel fitted to my little Sako Vixen and send dave Kiff some fired brass and have the reamer made to as closely duplicate my present one as is possible. It is a great caliber and is about the maximum (imo) for the caliber. I love it!

I'm glad to here good things about it. I have been wanting to build or buy a small caliber rifle for years and this sounds like a super neat little cartridge. I got rid of my neck turning equiptment some years back when i quit shooting the bench rest stuff but this comes with 100 pieces of already prepped and turned brass. The rifle belongs to a good friend i have known from the local gun club and since this rifle was built it has spent most of its time in his gun safe with very few rounds down the barrel. I am going to go get it this coming week and then figure what scope to put on it. When i start to load i will have to hit you guys up for some loading info. Thanks guys for the responses you have givin me, it has been a great help....DAN....

Hello Dan,
I have never owned a 17-222 but do own both a 17 Mach IV and a 17 Rem. I'm sure it should fall iright in between. I think the 17 Rem is a little to over bore for the caliber, it might be ok somewhere besides in the p-dog towns but just doesn't lend itself to high volume shooting. My 17 Mach IV will allow you to run 50 rounds through it with little or no fouling before cleaning.
That new Kelbly chambered 6BR barrel that I purchased from you for my Kodiak is still driving tacks. Everyone who shoot the thing is amazed, it will consistantly produce mid to high .1's with 75gr Vmax's, the poor thing will probably never see a competition target bullet.

Regards
RJ

All the barrels i have got from Kelbly have been amazing. They truly do excellent work period. I am a little jealous that i sold it now. Take care and i will call you to catch up....DAN....
