16” 22-250 Loads?--- UPDATE/5/19

i have a Rem factory varmint 22-250 barrel (12 T) that needs to be cut down to 16” or so at longest to be useable. it looks like a bullet blew up in the bore just past that. if i give this a try i wonder what powders and loads to try? i have done a search and found some info. i thought there might be something else out there.
in particular i wonder about VV powders? thanks
Update-- Pic of the gun-- doesnt look like it but took alot of work to get it to this point.
Also several have told me to use the single shot pistol section in Sierra manual so i will do that. of the powders they list i have H4895 and imr 3031-- ill try those-- also i think benchmark--

I have a 14" 22-250 XP 100 and a 15" .22-250 XP-R handgun, same twist as yours.I've never loaded VV powders. For 20+ years I've used only AA 2015 powder (34.4 gr. 40gr. BT & VMax) ,(33.6 gr. 50 gr. BT & VMax), (34.0 gr. Lehigh 45 gr. Chaos).
All of these loads shoot 3/8" at 100. I've taken over 2500 groundhogs & rockchucks, plus 10 deer with these guns & rounds.
Never saw a need to try any other powder.

thanks for that info hitman. I will look into that AA 2015.

Please keep this updated. I bought one of the super cheap Savage 12's a few years ago with a heavy 26" barrel. I'll probably chop it to 16" and have it threaded. I'm thinking that I have fast enough powders for 55 gr bullets, but I'm all ears/ eyes for what works in the real world.

Are you shooting these with moderator, straight pipe or word yet with a brake?

Probably just a shitty barrel from big green.

I've always said the best load in a barrel, is the best load, regardless of length. Some loads may lose more velocity than others, but so what, accuracy first, velocity second.

Best example is from my 6.5-284 days, H-4831-SC was the best in my 1K BR 28-30" guns. When I built an X-P 100 with an 18" barrel, same powder won out.

go for 16 1/2 “—. ive got quite a few different powders to try so ill post results— i plan on threading for a brake but i think ill just cut a crown on it for now and see wat its like to start.

thats interesting. - this was an accurate barrel when it was a 26” for a factory barrel.
the first i shot it as a shorty the other day the 50 grain speer none of them made it to target. the next bunch were sierra 52 grain and they shot pretty accurate. starting load of H4895 out of sierra SSP section. when a 26”er i used some N135 and mabie some imr 2320. never used H4895 in it before. ill check on that. the shorty sure makes some muzzle blast.

Whatever powder you used in your old 26" barrel
Use in the 16 inch barrel.
Smokeless Powder is converted to gas pretty quickly
Especially when under confinement
and I don't believe is so slow it is still burning 16 inches down the barrel.
------------------
I believe powder selection should be more catered to
Bullet Weight
Case Size
Bore expansion ratio
------------------
Since the barrel has been cut down, tune will be different
Requiring a different seating depth
The powder selection in how quickly you build pressure
should be catered more toward bullet weight
Or rather, the bullets resistance to movement, heavier being more resistant.
A 50 gr bullet is going to have the same stationary inertia/(resistance to movement)
regardless of the length of barrel.
---------------------
Meaning I would simply choose powders catered to a 50 grn bullet if I were using a 50 grn bullet.
Regardless of barrel length
W-748 would be my starting powder with 50-55 gr bullets

Here is some research for you to do

thanks for the info ELR— i do have some w-748 i will try. i am wondering if my velocity will be any more than a 24” 223 for the bullet weight. the 52s i shot were at about 3100 with starting load. its a fun project— time to put a higher powered scope on to see wat it will do.

This is with a "chitty" big and green varment barrel with varget and 52 Bergers
