150 round nose bullets in a 270w

I picked up a bunch of 150 gr round nose bullets that were blems from an unknown manufacturer a while back cause they wete to cheap for me to pass up. I am curious to know if anyone has used round nose bullets in a 270, or something similar and if you thought there were any benefits in terminal performance for that bore size.

My wife mistakenly bought Federal 150 grain round nose for hers. They killed just fine. That version, however, I feel had a much too narrow lead exposed tip. I have no basis for my belief, but I feel that it is counterintuitive to using a round nose projectile.

John, take a picture of your 150's and post the pics. I killed two does on one shot with my Ruger 77 a few years back, broad side shot, 150g Rem Core loct in tight quarters, complete penetration on the second doe with 56g of H4831.

I bet the second one got hot like a ton of bricks with the bullet being already expanded at impact!

Ill take some when I get home, maybe someone will recognize it

absolutely nothing wrong with a RN for close range. my uncle actually prefers them and slightly lower velocity for woods hunting 50-150yds over hot 130's.

I used the 174 Hornady RN in a short 303 (Jungle Carbine/No5 rifle) for ages. Worked just fine for bush hunting.

Hi John. I think as with many things it depends on what your intended use is. As has been discussed with fairly short ranges they will perform quite well. Round nose bullets have been used in the 270 Win for quite some time. The Sierra reloading manual edition 1 has 150 gr round nose loads listed with currently available powders. But the real test will be to determine how they shoot from your rifle.

I shot 154 gr RN Hornady bullets in a 7mm Rem mag for years at targets. It was very accurate. Dropped one deer in it's tracks with a chest shot.

I've used the round nose bullets in my 6.5x54 M-S rifles with excellent accuracy and performance. No they shouldn't be compared to the Berger or Sierra long range pointy bullets with high BC numbers. I did buy the Hornady 6.5mm 160 grain round nose during the closeout. Good performance using the shorter 20" barrels.

For Big Bore hunting, I've used the Woodleigh .458, 350 grain Express bullets:

Round nose bullets work great!

:)

I'll revive the thread. I'm a mega fanboy of round nose bullets for where and how I hunt (I load 180 grain Hornady round nose in my 30-06 pump) those pictured are federal bullets. I can't speak of the .27 cal but I can tell you from personal experience that the 180 grain in .30 cal blow through both sides of 230 pound bucks with no trouble at all. The 150 grain .27 cal version having even better SD than the 180 .30 cal version I can pretty much guarantee they'll do the same from your 270 if you keep them 2850fps and under; my 30-06 is loaded pretty hot it spits them out at 2825fps average with a maxed out load of R-16 and 22" barrel

Round nose 150s have been around for at least 75 years. They were orginally more heavily constructed and velocity was dropped to about 2800fps and advertised for shorter range woods use. I bought Peters in the 50s and used them for deer out to about 150 yds with iron sights. They never failed once and it was rare to recover one. Back in those days most hunting rifles were not accuracy tested but I could hit a grapefruit every time at 150.
