140gr 6.5 JLK bullets

Just recieved a pile of 6.5mm 140gr JLK bullets in the mail while I was at Camp Perry. Upon opening one box I noticed the base of the bullets to have a countersunk dimple. the old bullets I got from Jimmy did not have this. Has anyone shot these things & what has your experience been. My old Barrel with the old bullets worked real good together. I hope I dont have to send these back.

Thanks for your input.

Perhaps you could have JB ask Tom Murtiff about it. I know he has been using them and firing them at around 3050 with very light neck tension.

I don't know Mr Murtiff's email or phone number. He shot one relay at the NE regionals of 200 16x. I believe he finished 2nd.

RHINOUT!

Thanks Guys
So far this has set my mind a little more at ease. I guess Ill just shoot them & see what happens.

The Bullets I had in 2004 definatly did not have a concave recess in the base of the bullet like these do. I really dont care if the bullets are nice & bright and shiny like the old ones as long as they shoot.

UpDate:

Almost perfect conditions last night after work. Lapua Brass real light neck turn. CCI BR primmers, Remington 700, McMillian prone stock, 6.5X20 VeriX III with dot, off the sling @1000yds.

48 grains 4831SC about 2" Verticle ,No Mesuring device, Leatherman) 6" Horizontal Approx. Zero signs of pressure.

51 Grains of 4831 SC 1 rst round went into the wood frame 3MOA higher. Came down 2MOA & shot 4 realy nice clean beaking shots. Result: 3 1/2" spread with the 140 JLKs 7 thou off the lands.

We shot more that night so I had to paste up the holes but they were in the 8 ring so i will go back with my Caliper & see what they really Mesure by pulling of the pasters. Conditions were perfect. Looks like my concern was of some waste. JLK's are shooting fine. Of course I will have to retest that load but the Preliminary result look real good. This New Broughton seems to goble up any load combanation. Thats a change for me.

I think Tom said the A,or B) whichever bullet is no longer made cause the die broke, had the dimple...his current lot have no dimple...maybe you got the old bullets?

Either way, Tom said they shoot fine.

Here is a look at the base of the JLK bullets base. Went to the range this morning, it was cool & cloudy with some light sprinkles, Got two groups in before it started raining. the last group measured.363. so that looked pretty good. Im no bench shooter so that is not to bad for me. Id like to get them going faster than 2889 FPS.

Ill Keep you all posted.

Russ

Maybee we should put this in the 6.5 catagory were it belongs?

The box of bullets says A in the corner so these are the A model or die.

So far its been good. Ive just about used up a box of 150 with good results. at 1000 in good weather conditions the bullets posted a 200/12X then a few days later they gave me a 200/15X @ 600yds. I have no problem with them at all so things are looking good. Had a four shot group that went .296 moa @1000, the first shot went into the frame at 12:00 with two grains more powder)Im happy with the new Broughton Barrel also : )

Regional this weekend so Im hoping to put them all in the ten ring.

Well just an update. These bullets shoot fantastic in my smoke pole. Shot 980-37X in some ugly conditions for our regional Long range match. Tied my old record from last year wich was way nicer out. I better put in another order : )
Broughton Barrel has been real good also.

Russ,

Just saw this thread..... Glad the 140's are working for you...

A note about bullet making: We have only one die to make 6.5mm bullets and have never had another. The difference in tail shapes is entirely regulated by the tail punch being used that day, not the die.

Unlike dies, which are made to last for millions of bullets, tail punches are fragile and expendable, especially boat tail punches. They frequently get dinged and have to be sent off for re-conditioning. This also frequently necessitates a change in punches in the middle of a run of bullets. When a punch is dinged a new punch is installed in the press and a break point in the run is made to separate the previous bullets from the ones made with the new punch.

We have many punches of both flat base and dimpled base rotating between the "ready use" bin and the re-furb box, to be sent out for work at some point. We use what's available when we need a new punch.....

The difference in shape of the punch base is-was a function of which machinist made the punches. Neither one seems to be better or worse than the other, just slightly different. The next batch of bullets you get from us may have the dimpled base like the ones you have now, they may just as easily be made with a conventional flat base.

Best regards,
