14-twist 6 PPC for Deer - Any Suitable Bullets

I have a chance to pick up a lovely Sako 6PPC repeater and was wondering whether it could be used for deer hunting. It has a 1:14 twist, and, from some research with a stability calculator, I don't think it would stabilize any bullet over about 70 grains--maybe 75 at the most. So my question is whether there are any 70-gr. or thereabouts bullets on the market that would be suitable for deer hunting (no larger game).

What do you all think? Is this a fool's errand?

I do not think a 1-14 will stabilize anything over. 70 grn bullet. I’m not sure how well a 70 grn Ballistic Tip at 2900 fps would do against White Tails. You could try the Barns TSX 80 grn FB. If it stabilizes these, that would be your best bet given the pressure restrictions of the Sako.

I have shot 80 grn Barts Dominators (not a hunting bullet), out of a 13.5 twist with decent results. 1-12 is a lot better.

The discontinued Hornady 70gr SP shoots well in my 14t Sako, I found some on GB. Hammer makes a 55gr but they say it needs a 12t, haven't tried them tho. Nosler BT might do the trick too.

I think it would work if your willing to pass up shots where you cannot take a little time and place the shot properly.

85 gr Partition and 85gr GameKing HPBT are go to’s for 12 twist. You might look at those, or input their data into a twist calculator if nothing else.
Their lengths as listed are .950” & .934”~
Most likely these will be too long or heavy as it were.

Thanks, guys. I've checked with the JBM Ballistics stability calculator, and I don't think anything over 70 gr. would stabilize, as Jackie Schmidt noted above. Problem is that there do not appear to be any 70-gr. bullets that would be up to deer hunting.

I had the exact rifle and the same problem. No bullet that I felt was properly constructed for hunting would be stabilized so I sold it.

Dave.

Hammer bullets makes a 55gr Hammer Hunter they recommend a 1:12. I assume a PPC could get 3500fps or better. That would kill deer if they'd stabilize
