139 and 140 in the 6.5x47

Hi all,
I was wondering if any one is using the 139-140gn. weight projectiles in the 6.5x47? what sort of loads are you using and how do they compare to the 123-130 weight class projectiles?

Thanks,

Mitchell, the Victorian FO team did well in Tasmania recently and relied fairly heavily on the 6.5x47L with 140's around the 2820fps node and 2209.

I only shoot 140s(136-142) class bullets in my 6.5x47. I use around 40 (+/- 0.3g) of H4350 for about 2820-40 depending on bullet. All of the bullets that I have tried all seem to shoot well around that node.

I shoot 140 berger hybrids. 41.5 H4350 at 2900 and it flat shoots good. work up to this. my rifle shows no pressure signs and I have brass that is on its 10 reload.

That is the exact load I use. Shoots better than me!

I don't shoot one myself, but know a few that do. They shoot some pretty stiff loads, and can't reach 2800 fps with the 139-140gr bullets. They have settled for something more suitable for that case. 123-130gr bullets.

What makes a 123-130g bullet more suitable for the 6.5x47 Lapua case?

Are all the people that easily get 2800 fps all shooting the wrong bullets?

I shoot a 140 hunting vld with a stiff charge of Vv n550 @ 2930.
Very accurate and is deadly on antelope and deer.

The case capacity. That case has a capacity of 47 grains. Do you really expect people to believe that it will push a 140 grain bullet at the velocity a 6.5x284, or 6.5x55 AI will push the same 140 grain bullet ??? :o ::)
The velocities listed above by wildchild are more realistic ;)

A tale of two barrels:

My first barrel was a Criterion Savage prefit 30 inch 6.5x47 Lapua. My load was 37.7g of Varget with 140g JLKs for a velocity of 2910fps with single digit ESs. My best score at a 1000 yard relay in no conditions at Oak Ridge was a 198-11Xs on the F-class target. I used Lapua brass with CCI 450 primers with the bullet 12 thous into the lands. I bought 200 Lapua cases and used those same cases until the barrel gave occasional flyers and would not hold what I thought is should at my mid-range matches. I retired that barrel at about 1600 rounds. (1600 rounds/200 cases = 8 reloads/case)

My second barrel is a Benchmark chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua using a "match" chamber (unsure freebore) chambered by Kevin Rayhill as a Savage prefit at 28 inches. My current load is H4350 at 40.2g with 140g Berger Hybrids 8 thous off the lands. This load chronographs at 2820 fps and the come-ups match that drop to 1000 yards. My best score in Midrange with this barrel (have 284 Win barrel for LR now) is 448-25X with a clean 150-11X at 300, a clean 150-11X at 600 yards and a 148-4X at 500 yards. I did not replace those same 200 cases that I shot in my first barrel and continue to shoot the same cases in this rifle. I now have approximately 1100 rounds through this barrel with losing exactly 4 cases (primer pocket). (1100 rounds/200 cases = 5.5 reloads/case).

So although it is impossible to shoot a 6.5 x 47 to 2800 fps, I have done so in two barrel with great precision and my cases have had on average 13.5 reloads/case in doing so. It is not my fault, nor the fault of Lapua, that the design of the 6.5x47 Lapua is more efficient than that of the 6.5x284 or 6.5x55 AI.

What is your next argument? Remember, you stated yourself that you do not even shoot this cartridge so why the problem with it?

40.4 H4350 and 140 vlds .010 in got me 2850 at 27". 2820 after a set back to 25.5". I'm at 2000 rounds and I'm still using the same 200 pcs of brass, haven't lost one yet. She's starting to give a flier here and there, so I'm about to rebarrel. I'm gonna keep using the same brass until it gives up, but no indications that is will any time soon.

I have three loads for my 47 that have been ladder tested and used in 1000 yard matches. 130 VLD with 37.3 Varget and CCI 450 touching the lands running 2865. The next two use 39.8 RE17 and Fed 205m. The 140 Hybrid at 2910 and the 136 L at 2895. Fired thru an Ohler and confirmed at 700-1000 yards using the Shooter program. The RE 17 and 140 Hybrid has been used in and won 1000 yard matches. I have shot it 14 straight months with no issues due to temp. Shilen select match barrel 28 inch. Berger will tell you 24 fps per inch of barrel so you can do he math on yours. People that do not shoot this caliber and only look at case capacity are missing the boat. It's a very efficient round that produces outstanding accuracy and some impressive speed as well.

I will not post my load data, but 140's moving 2900+ and I have no pressure signs. 30" broughton. 10-14 loads on my brass, have not lost a single piece yet. 2300 rounds on the barrel as of my last match. My last 600 yd match I shot a 200-15x. The previous midrange match I shot a 200-12x. Back at the big matches in Raton I shot a few cleans at 800 with 2000 rds on the barrel.
All of the above scores are documented here on this site in the comp section.
I'm not shooting the hybrids yet. Next barrel maybe.

Please tell everyone you know the 47L is for light bullets only and keep loading in the 2800 range and save the barrels ;-)

H4350. there are a few loads posted that are more than I load in mine by a few tenths.
I guess I have a "fast" barrel ;D

I'm shooting the 140 BTLRM Bergers 26409
