$1350 decision buy new, build, buy used?

I'm trying to make the $1350 decision. Should I buy a Savage Model 12 F class,6mm BR naturally), build my own, or buy a used BR gun? What are the pros and cons of each? It's use initially will be varmints, predators and steel from 200-500 yards. I'd also like to avoid turning necks.

Buy a used Savage and re-barrel.
They really do well.
I am in the process of re-doing my rebarreled Savage F-110 in .260 with a 6 BR.

Fred over at sharp shooters supplies may have a new timed and trued target action in stock for starters.Or see what he wants to build a custom for.

For one-stop shopping, you could call Jim Briggs at Northland SHooters Supply - he carries actions, stocked actions, McGowen and Shilen barrels.

For $725 you can get an LRPV RB/LP stocked action. Barrels run $300-$330. Another $75 worth of tools and you can put it together yourself. Then you have more money left for the scope. The only thing about buying the finished rifle is that while Savage barrels are good, they may not be quite as good as an aftermarket barrel.

I've bought from him before. Straight up guy. Good service, very knowledgable. Then you can call Sharp Shooters Supply and get on Fred Moreo's waiting list for a time and true job - optional, but very nice.

I have 3 custom actions guns I got used. I think that is the way to go. Find a nice 6 PPC with a action you like, have the boltface opened up to a 6BR if needed, some fit both. Have the barrel punched to 6BR 0.272 neck. This is my last buy. A Bat 6BRX. I had it restocked and added a muzzle brake

derherr65,

If you rebuild a factory gun, start with just the action or build a custom most of the cost are the same. Barrel, stock, trigger, chambering, bedding, and having it put together, so the main cost difference is the action.

A friend of mine just had Remington built. He took a Remington gun, and took the action only, had it trued, Barreled, muzzle brake, stock, and payed to have it put together. He has a nice gun, but he said should have got a used custom action gun and changed the barrel, he would have no more than he just spent on the Remington.

I have had Remingtons and Savage rebuilt and and still have some, they are great guns, but they do not compair to a custom action.

If you can pick up a used custom action gun with alot of thing that you will keep on the gun you can save a lot of money. But if you have to change all the things, it will not be a savings, you may be best to build a gun from scratch.

Just like the gun above, If I ordered it today from the gunsmith it would run close to $4000.00,Just the gun not counting the scope) I have half of that in it.

If you find a nice PPC, you can change it to 6BR for less than $ 200.00 depending on the gunsmith. Add a new barrel for $400.00 to $500.00
