130 VLD question for Deer Load

Sorry it's taken a while. Checked my notes and I'm running 43gr which is pretty much a starting load. Haven't chronoed this load but estimating 2700fps. Not fast but I don't care. The bullet has enough accuracy and BC to make well placed shots.

So you are saying that 2648 fps with a 139 grain bullet out of a 20" barrel is too slow and that I will get another 150fps if I use H4350 without pressuring out? Really?

Yeah, I don't think so.
Ok in my 260 I can't get enough H4831SC in a case to get pressure even with a 147g pill best I could get was just under 2710fps in a 24" barrel now with H4350 with a 147g pill 2850fps was easy with a cci 200 primer and still had radiest edges so I figure yeah you should get pretty close with a good load in a 20" tube .
So yeah I'm saying 2648 foe a 139g pill is creedmoor slow or slower .

If you are pushing a 147 grain bullet at 2850 out of a standard .260 Rem 24" barrel, you are significantly overpressure, regardless of what your primers look like. Physics is physics.
Additionally, the 6.5 Creedmoor is essentially the same ballistically as the .260 Rem, so I am not sure I am getting your comment that it is "Creedmoor slow or slower". The .260 only holds about 2.5% more powder than a Creedmoor, but is a 60K cartridge, while the Creedmoor is a 62K cartridge.

At the end of the day, you do you. I will continue to chase accuracy over velocity and stay within sane pressures.

I have a tikka forest 260 remington that I loaded some berger 130 vld hunting bullets for. Berger says with varget 33.5 to 37 grains max getting 2481 to 2703 fps. I got with 36.6 a speed of 2593 , i know their chart says they use 24 inch barrel and I have a 20 inch. My question is can I increase my speed safely , not much on pushing the limits but i see speeds of 2700 on this site can iI get there with shorter barrel . Second I noticed in write ups it says 300 plus yards for berger 130 vlds ,I get all my deer here 100 or less. will it not open right ?

elite hunter leftover.jpgWell, it may not open. It will fragment and lead core can leave the game without transferring the expected energy. Below you will find the copper jacket of Elite Hunter that I pulled out of a deer last week. The lead core was gone. VLD is an open tip bullet just like Elite Hunter or Hybrid (just a different ogive). I hit the scapula blade and the bullet did not retain much weight as you might expect. My deer was shot at 120m.

Staball6.5 in my 20" Tikka will get a 140 over 2700, it's currently on loan to one of my coworkers because his kid drew an elk tag and needed something with less recoil.

H4350 got me just under 2800 with a 129gr LR Accubond and I killed an elk with it last year.

Well I think any case lapua or not that will take 9 loads and neck size with very little resistance on a bolt is not a over pressure load .
One more firing and I will bump the shoulder.

And as for accuracy this is 3 at 757 yards just saying some rifles will digest some impressive loads and mine is renowned for slow barrels but it isn't its the difference between a book load and a hand load .

With regards to speed, I'd say that you should be able to get more than that out of a 20" barrel, but I'm not sure if you can do it with that powder or not.

I don't have a 6.5CM, but my 6.5 Grendel (24") will shoot factory 123gr Hdy SST just over 2600 fps. Most of my handloads for that bullet are just a little over 2500 fps. Obviously the 130gr VLD is a heavier bullet, but you have a LOT more case capacity, and another 10k psi to work with.

I also shoot 7-08 140gr NBT in a 16" Encore and get around 2600 fps with N550. I remember that barrel being really slow with Varget and BLC-2. N140, N540, and N550 all gave me better accuracy and much better speed. For what you're doing, I'd probably try N140 or N540 if I were trying to maximize accuracy and speed. Then again, if you're not shooting past 150 yds, there's no value in trying get more speed.

I've also never tried the 130vld on game. I run a 105gr MKZ at 2800 fps in my Grendel, and have been EXTREMELY impressed with accuracy and terminal performance on whitetail, including some bigger bucks. If I were running a bigger 6.5 case, I'd likely focus on their 118gr MKZ. That said, at under 150 yds on deer, I wouldn't feel like I needed to be super picky on what bullet I'm shooting.
