12x scope for an AR tactical rifle

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
The rules (last time I looked) for the NRA AR tactical class limits scopes to 12x, 15x and just like in Service Rifle the NRA HP committee was 5 yrs behind the tech when they made that rule; however, I'm thinking that if I've got the time this yr I may try to get my oldest (10yo) behind one of my ARs to give this a whirl, but I don't own a scope that meets the requirements.

I know the SWFA SS 12x, and the Bushy LRTS 3-12 would probably both work, but they are in .1mils not ¼ MOA is there anything out there that meets the 12x limit that has repeatable turrets in ¼ moa clicks?

The other option is to just say screw the training wheels class and put him behind my F-TR 223. I don't have an issue with that, but I have to make a stock short enough to do it and I really don't want to whack 3 inches off of any of the ones I have here, but it may be the way to go.

Thanks, I've had 2 other SWFA scopes, and liked them. I knew they used to make a MOA version, didn't know they still did.

As usual you are so quick to complain instead of simply looking at the rule yourself. You are the one that is behind. They changed the rule last year. It would be nice if people just looked at the rules BEFORE they logged on and pointed out how the whole world is AFU because it doesn't fit what they have in equipment.

Yeah, I could give the new limit but the thought of you reading instead of just complaining just seems right.

XTR, what stock and action is that that you may have to cut down? Remington or Savage, wouldn't it be just as easy to put your son in the. 223 FTR rifle? For a 10 year old it would probably be easy on him for single loading. The gas gun could come later for fun. Also I'm sorry that you have to go thru some undue criticism on your thread.

Well that was a bit of a workout but I finally found it. Like most rule books I have looked at over the years the info was located in a section of the manual that made no sense, hidden away in some remote corner.
Of coarse it could be I have never been on the wavelength of those who write such things.

I'm thinking this is the way I may go, mostly because I've watched him shooting a 22 with a squeeze bag and with a full sized rifle it's hard for the small hands to make it work, the more I think about it I think that's not the best answer.

My 223 F-TR rifle is a Remington 700. I've got a PR&T F-TR stock that I picked up yrs ago to play with a 40x 22lr that I can cut down. I can eventually put in an adjustable buttplate that can adjust as he grows.

That sounds great. The reason I asked was because if it was a Savage I have what is the same stock as the ftr minus the vents that would have been an easy cutdown modification for him. I would have offered it to you very cheap for your son. I also realized after I posted I really didn't answer your question, which for that I apologize.

Don, I hadn't thought about the Savage, I've got one of those too. (yea, I have to many F-TR rifles)

Mine has the 4.4 hole spacing. It was my first attempt at a 223 for F-TR, I may try to get a load working in it. If I do I'll get back with you. That may be a good plan.

Sorry, I should have mentioned the stock is a 4.27" screw spacing. Last month I sold my buddy (teele1) a like new 4.40" BVSS stock that has been sitting around for years. You could however move the front pillar, that's what Jim Carr (teele1) does when he needs to.

I've never messed with the Savages other than this one. Is that all it takes is moving the front pillar??

My 8 Year Old(Logan) shot his first Tactical AR 600 yard Mid-Range Prone match yesterday at Golden Triangle Gun Club in Beaumont, Texas. After he settled in, he shot 197-12x. It could have been a 199 but the wind changed between shot's 18 & 19(last 2 shots were 9's blown off to the Right).

I would certainly recommend the SWFA(12x). My 16 Year Old son(Dylan) uses one of the SWFA 10x scopes with good success. Logan is using one of the Primary Arms 4-14 R-Grid 2B Scopes. Both scopes are Mil/Mil. The tenth mil adjustments work out to 2.16" at 600 yds. That amount of adjustment appears to be good enough when shooting at the 6" X-Ring.

I highly recommend the Tactical AR for Beginers. The .223 bullets can really force the issues when learning to read wind.

Well XTR, I believe Andy has the answers for a youngster shooting the AR Tactical class. I'm going to pay attention myself and learn something. I have a 12x SWFA I was considering putting on my AR and trying the class for fun.

About two years ago Logan(now 8 years old) started shooting Prone with a Savage bolt action 22lr using a cheap Simmons Mil-Dot scope. Last year he became consistent enough to move out to 200 yards shooting a 12" Steel Plate. We painted the plate orange so we could see the hits and with subsonic ammo & suppressor he really liked to "ring the steel". At 200 with the .22 he was already learning about wind and maintaining good form/shooting techniques.

So....Logan had been seeing his big brother(Dylan-NRA Tactical AR High Master) shooting and wanted to shoot an AR also. We installed a CMMG 22LR adapter in one of my AR's and got him familiar with shooting it(we did this for a couple trips to the range). This past month we replaced the 22lr adapter with a BCG and he began shooting Full Power 5.56(69 grain SMK's) at 100 yards(using 600 yard Reduced Pratice Targets). Logan's best was a 196-4x on the 100 yard pratice targets.

Logan got his big break the Monday before Christmas. In preparation for the clubs next match, Ray Potter(Mid-Range Match Director at Bayou Rifles Manvel, Texas) was seeking assistance with Test Firing/Calibration of the Clubs Shot Marker Electronic Targets at the 300 yard line. Logan shot around 30-40 test/calibration rounds. After calibrations were complete Ray allowed Logan to shoot a simulated match from the 300 yard line(189-7x). This was Logan's first time to shoot past 200 yards. Six days later Logan shot his first 600 Yard Mid-Range Club Match in Tactical AR at Golden Triangle Gun Club(Beaumont, Texas).

Scope wise....the only issue with we have had with the SWFA is the Fixed Power. Mirage kicked-up last month on Dylan and he could not mitigate it by reducing magnification.

We have a Nikon P223(3-9x40 BDC) on another one of our rifles. It does OK.....the adjustments seem lazy sometimes. You'll make a couple clicks(then a few more) and finally....a few shots later the POI shifts. I tap the knobs after making an adjustment and avoid dialing for windage(probably best bet anyways). The Glass is clear enough for 600 yards though. You can pick these up for around $100. Maybe the Nikon 4-12 would be better....IDK.

I hope you guys give the class at try.....it's loads of fun and does NOT break the bank shooting it. There's not a lot of expensive equipment required.

Andy, congratulations to you and to your boys success. Would you post some information on your AR rifles? I have a new MSR 15 Savage that I will try. I probably will shoot this class once in a while, but may upgrade equipment to have something more suitable for the task. I believe we will all benefit from some decent information on what is working for AR Tactical shooters.

Don,

I created a new thread under "Small Stuff-22's, 20's & 17's"

"Posted by Request-NRA Mid-Range Prone Tactical AR .223 Rifles"

Hope you and others find the info and opinions there useful.
