115 beger in .243 Custom improved

hi hope some can help an just fining putting together a .243 improved, basically .243 ackly but with 30 degree shoulder )
its got a pac-nor 28 long with 1 in 7.5 twist barrel and ill be use 115 Berger's and vit n160 could anyone recommend a load for ! the rifle is to used for 1000 yard f-Class!
thank for any help

i hav choss a 30deree shoulder as i found that my .30-60ackly was hard to relaod for as the case neck would cave in when seating bullets! and 6br dose not have that capcity the fire the bergs at the 3300fps iam after ! barrel life dosr not bother me i do all my owen gunsmithing! and barrels are just one more running cost! just wounder if any one had tried 115 berges in .243 ackley and what sort of velocity they were getting?
thanks,ill be happy if i get 3000)

I saw on another website that 43-45 grains of 160 worked well in a standard 243. You might want to try RL25 or H1000 with the improved case. I know of someone using N170 with excellent results also.

Just FYI,

A shooting friend of mine has a similar cartridge developed. It is an improved 243 with a 40 degree shoulder. He shoots 107 SMKs exclusively in it.

He recently had the bbl pulled to install a different action. The gunsmith told him that his bbl was "Toast" and needed to be replaced. A look with a borescope proved the gunsmith was spot on. The bbl had 700 rds down the tube.

That was an expensive 700 rds.

Just a thought.

Since you have not got any good 243 improved feedback on your 115 Berger Question I will add this.

Im running the 6mm Super X. It is made by sliding the 6XC die down over the 243 case, giving you that nice .300+ long neck and 30 deg shoulder. My rifle is a NRA prone gun made for Iron sight at 1000 yards. Last sunday I took it out and shot it for the first time at 1000 yards. It did very well with the 115 berger VLD's I also tryied the 105 berger VlD's they did not shoot as well for me.

My load for the 115's is this.

Lapua Brass, 42.5 grains of R22, 210 Match primer, jammed in 10 thou, .002 neck tension.

Extreme spread on this load was 11Fps. for ten rounds. Average speed was 3005fps with no signs of pressure at all. .383 @ 100 yard group.

105 load is Lapua Brass, 44.5gr N560 goeing 3150fps. Extreme spread was not good at 25fps. but it shot good at 100 with just a hair over quarter MOA. But the 1000 yard results were not good which does not sprise me with the ES that high.

Right now this Cartridge does not give up anything against my 6.5X284 shooting 142 grain match kings.

I have not shot the 115 DTAC and probably never will after seeing the results of the Bergers. I belive you will have no problen getting 3000 fps + with your case.

Let us know how it works out for you. and take a picture of your rig.

P17 - have you looked over this article?

Although it doesn't deal with your specific case, there is good info about the .243 and the .243 AI, some of which might be useful.

would you want to try some slower powders with the big 115gr? Here is my segestions.

N165
H4831SC
IMR4831
R-22

Aprox. how long is the neck on this case you are shooting?

Your 42 grain load looks OK once you subtract the bullet Dia .243, accepted standard for group messuring) I would play around with neck tension and bullet seating depth on that load.

Good Luck

I think you will find the Berger VLD's don't like to jump and in most rifles they won't shoot well jumping. I say this because in your testing you indicate your were jumping them .025".

+2 on the seating. A soft jam, just into the lands work well for me in the 6XC and I'm sure in the 6 Super X as well.

I also don't think you can get them up to 3300 fps with a 243 AI.I use a 6mm-06 and they don't like much velocity.

In my opinion you are waisting your time with the Bergers. Sometimes you get a barrel with a specific seating depth that likes them, but normally they don't shot great groups.

Berger, even understand the diffuculy of getting their bullets to shot and if your lead, taper into the rifling from the chamber) is not exactly correct these bullets don't shoot.

However, you can try the DTAC 115's. They are more forgiving and should give you much better results and will work over a much wider range of seating depths.

I have found the Berger 115's to shoot very accurately and to group better and to shoot more consistently than the DTAC 115's, but I will qualify this statement as follows:

1. I never had good accuracy or consistency with any of the 6mm 115's drinving them much over 3000 fps. I think there's a very forgiving accuracy node around 2950-2975 fps, and for 600 yard shooting, what more do you need with a bullet that has a BC near .600?

2. I have had mixed results with the DTAC 115's, just unexplained flyers here and there, but enough of them to cause me to stop using them. Never had this with the Bergers once I got them dialed in.

3. If you drive the Bergers hard you can blow them up,one more reason to stay under 3000 fps).

4. I honestly think the 115's are an ideal bullet for 600-1000 yards. For across the course work and the slow prone 600 yard stage, the 105-108 gr bullets are just a good,if not better), you can run them faster, and they are very easy to get shooting well, consistently and accurately.

tried some n165 yesterday got much better groups ! load were as follows lapua brass, pmc std rifle primer, the Russian ones) and n165 with the following load s under a 115 Berger vld

groups measured over widest points

load group
41 gr 5/8''

42 gr 1 1/2'',bad driving on my part! will retest)

43 gr 1/2''

44 gr 1/2''

45 gr 1/2 ''

I'm going to work up to 47 grains in .5 grain increments as i have had no sing of presser yet and vertical reduced between 43gr and 45 grain from 1/2'' to just over 1/4''

thanks for the help every one !!!
