working up loads for a 30-06 i find the extractor slipping off the rim at the top of the bolt lift. the case can be pushed out very easy with cleaning rod. 6-8 lb presure. i am used to 700 rems which will extract over loads. is this normal and may chamber polish help? this is with normal bolt lift. thank you

JB:

Ther could be several things but I would first check for dirt and trash under the extractor. The extractor slides in a dovetail groove. It has a detent ball under it with a spring pushing the detent ball into a detent in the underside of the extractor. You can easily remove the extractor with a small punch by pushing it overr the detent ball. Be carefull not to loos the detent ball and spring.

thank you Mr. Lambert but i forgot to say it's old. fixed ejector, no ball and spring as you explained. maybe a controlled round feed?

it's extraction, normal bolt lift but at top of lift when bolt is cams back the extractor pops over rim without starting case rearward. gun has not been shot much, under 100rd. extactor seems to have a lot of spring tension but haven't another to compare to.

Sounds like you have one of the older beryliam copper extractors that were cast. Some have problems with worn edges. Replace it with one of the newer steel extractors and replace the 1/8' detent ball with a 9/64' ball. The larger ball will hold the extractor closer to the center of the bolt face.

The 'old' style c-clip extractors have been out of production for 40 years. Chance of finding one is slim to none. The only viable fix is to change over to current production parts, which means that most of the bolt assembly will have to be replaced and the barrel will need to be recut and headspaced. If you were to pay a gunsmith to do that, it would be less money to buy a new Stevens.
