107gr match king in a 1in10 twist barrel

Have a 6mmAI with a 1in10 twist barrel.
I normally use the1505match king 70 gr with great results at 3900 fps.
Wondering if its a fast enough twist for the 107.
If so what powder would anyone recomend?
The barrel is a shilen and 27 in long.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Just checked my box labels for my 107 SMK's and unlike Berger, Sierra does not give any reference to bullet/barrel twist rate. I use a lot of them, but 6BR & 6BRX barrels are 8 twist.

My box's of Berger 105's ( # 24428) clearly specify " 1-8 twist or faster". Overall length's of the 2 are very close.

Easiest thing for you to do is load up 10 or 15 & go shoot them. You'll quickly know if they will work or not.

Depending on your barrel, it may or not be a true 1-10 twist, could be a little faster or slower.

I would say that the twist is too slow, if I remember right sierra recamends a 1 in 8 twist or faster with that bullet. I had a Savage 243 with a 1 in 9.25 twist, and it was on the verge of not stabilizing.(I remember talking to a balitisian at Sierra about this. and they said it may or may not work.) This barrel was a bit on the fast side, and would stabilize the bullet. You will not pick up enough gyroscopic stability with speed, to stabilize the bullet by pushing it harder. If you want a heavy bullet designed for a 1 in 10 twist try the BIB 108 BT.

Thanks guys I didn't realise they requiered a 1in8 twist.
I did the math and a1in8 will spin it as fast at 3000 fps as a 1in10 will at about 3700 fps and there is no way I can push it that fast.

And, just to verify, I checked my 500 count box's of the 107 SMK #1570's, and the label has a warning, " 7" through 8" twist bbls. only".

105 A-max will shoot fine in your 10 twist.
I shot them from a 10 twist 40-x in 6 mm Rem
a couple of years in 600 yard matches.

With your 10 twist 6AI try some Hornady 87 grain V-Max bullets. RL-19 is a good powder for mid weight bullets in 6AI.

bp1965,
Every gun is different, as a general rule no! a 1:10 isn't fast enough to stabilize a 105 bullet, but as Randy stated his rifle would stabilize the 105 a-max bullets I also have a 1:10 that will shoot the amax bullets very well and it is only 19.5" long yet it will not stabilize the 105 Bergers, I think it is because the bearing surface isn't as long on the A max bullets, I have a friend that bought a Thompson Encore in .243 he rechambered it to 6*284, it's a 1:10 and it shoots the 107 SMK's very good so it all depends, I have a bunch of 6mm's in various chamberings in 1:8 twists some will shoot the 115's and some won't, give them a try is all I can say.

I will add to my earlier post that I tried the 107 SMK in my
6 mm Rem and the 10 twist did not stabilize the SMK at all.
But Hornady reccomends a 9 twist for the 105 A-Max and
they performed well with my 6mm Rem. If I loaded it hot
the A-max stabilized all the way to the 1,000 yd line.

I used H 4350.

If you have the 107's on hand and want to try it to satisfy your curiosity..... it's your rifle. Most likely it is going to be a waste of time unless you're fireforming or something like that.

Having had a 10 twist 6-284 ..... I seriously doubt the 107's will work well even at 100yds let alone the longer distances. 95gr was as big as I could marginally stabilize with the 6-284 I had and the 80gr bullets always shot best at distance over the 95's. Just my experience. :) WD

Anyone have good powder in mind for a 107 gr bullet in a 6AI just incase I decide to give it a go?

Start @ 48.0 grains of H4831SC and give it a whirl. RL-22 as mentioned is another good powder to try.

I had an XP100 with a 10 twist barrel, tried 107 smk's with Varget, got it up to around 2500 fps with a 14 inch barrel. Shot great at 100 yards, hit the paper sideways at 250 yards.
