107 smk or 105 hybrid

Trying to decide which bullet to load for Memphis mid range in a 6br. I know the 107 smk does well at mid range as we shot it all last year, I have only had a chance to shoot the 105 hybrid out to 300. I can tell very little difference in them at 300 yards. MAYBE the berger has a SLIGHT edge, but its untested at 500 and 600. Here is the kicker, Its my daughters gun and she has done very well with the 107 smk, If the hybrid will give an advantage in the wind at 600 then i want to give her every advantage possible bein a dad and all. SOOO do i take the chance and load the berger oor stick with what we know? HELP

First I want to say that I think it is GREAT that kids are getting interested in the shooting sports>>especially girls! So my hat is off to you for the encouragement in that area.. Now, to answer you question. The Berger 105 Hybrid has a B.C. of .547 and the 107 SMK's have a B.C. of .527>>>you will not notice the difference>>>>the B.C. variance is too small. There has never been a reason to to "fix" something that is not broke... If the 107 SMK's are doing what you need them to do>>>continue to do so. The ONLY reason you may want to change (and I say MAY want to change) is if you are not getting the ACCURACY you want and or need out of the 107's.. I hope that my 2 cents worth helps.

Guess i am nit picking here, just want every advantage for her possible. I have just seen many doing well with the hybrid and just letting my brain work to much. She just shot a 448-27x out of 450 in a 500 yard match in Chattanooga TN. a few weeks ago so guess it aint broke .

I would not disrupt a known good load, especially during a match. Try the new bullets during a practice session and don't even tell her that they are different.

That way you can get a decent comparison between the two bullets.

If you can't resist tempting fate (and a possible disappointed daughter) then only load one match with the 105H and don't tell her which match they are loaded in. See what happens.

During a match, I don't test new stuff!

I KNOW I KNOW, i am a born tinkerer and if it was my gun i wouldnt care at all to test during a match, i would feel bad if i caused a train wreck so i better stick with what works this weekend for her. Now me on the other hand will be trying a new fairly untested gun.

It's NOT broke, DON'T try to fix it.

Good Luck,

Troy,

Don't "experiment" at an NRA Registered State Championship! Bring what you know works. I'd hate for your daughter to miss out on a Junior National Record because her dad wanted to "try something new"!

See you this weekend!

Doug

The difference at 600 yards, 2900 fps and 5 mph crosswind, is ~.14". If your daughter is shooting 448 at 500; yes, the B.C. could occasionally make a difference. I would not change your known good load for this match. But, if you are willing to pay the extra price for the 105 Hybrid, I think they are worth future consideration.

I was going to post something similar to sleepy - but the problem is, you have to get an accuracy node for the hybrids that is at least the same fps or the margin diminishes to nothing. The 2 grains difference may make that achievable?

I am kinda curious if you have analysed why the two points were dropped....would BC solve that problem...?

Good point. I've found that the Hybrid's reduced bearing surface allows a little more velocity at the same pressure levels. My current 6BR load is ~2960 from 30" with 105 Hybrids. That is ~40 fps more than my accuracy load with 107 MK. Sierra has lagged a little in the B.C. arms race but their bullet designs are usually very easy to tune.

When I talked to him last night on the phone, he related that the group with the hybrid was printing about an inch higher than the SIE bullets. This tells me either the better BC or the load is pushing the bullet a lil faster, either way I feel the load with the hybrids is showing a lot of promise, this was at 200 yards. Also he felt that the group shot was just a tad better in it's verticle over the SIE bullets as well.. It seems to me that the hybrids are shooting very well in the rifle as is. Going by the info that was related to me on the phone. I personally would not be scared to use the hybrid if it is shooting well in the rifle... I feel an edge at 600 yards is always a good thing.. but in the same token.. I feel that if Chele is used to using the SIE bullet, then don't change it. As for me, I am always willing to step out of the box to try something new..

I am going there to with a rifle that has 2050 rounds on the bbl.. with the 90's and RL15, right now it is still shooting good.. but that could change at any time.. I am waiting on bbl's and one of my current bbl's is already on the down side of accuracy.

I am not saying that I am trying to encourage them to switch to the hybrid.. just relating that I would not be nervous about it either.

I have tested the hybrids at 300 and in and have tried diff powder and seating depth combos , just not farther. The accuracy is very good with the hybrid. That said i loaded her ammo today with the sierras so she will have confidence in what she has this weekend. Hope all goes well , we havent been able to shoot much this year but we will have fun. Its a daddy/daughter weekend!! Froggy, i am taking the little 223 with a harris bipod so i am sure this will be ummm interesting to say the least. see ya there

I have been doing the same project with my boy for the last few years, it's fun and work to say the least. Be sure to let us know how she did we are all cheering for her. Mike

TT,

Dang, I was all set to bring you a coat and a sling to use! I am sure that you will do well with that lil popgun of a 223. From the targets that you have showed me pics of, i am sure that it will do just fine..

ttfreestyle,

Try the hybrids jumped about .015 for yourself...it doesn't get any better..that's what I shot there last year...look forward to seeing you'll again...

BTW..the 1st annual Barrel chunking contest will be held this weekend :)

That's right where I am. Touch is 2.422" and mine are loaded 2.407". Went through the range from .015" jam to .030" jump and .015" gave the best results. Shot a 300 yard match last Saturday for the first time. 450-35X.

Steve, what increment do you use when you are searching for the right amount of seating depth?

Bill, [br]
I used .003" and 5 shot groups. After I found 2.407", I shot five groups at that setting to confirm that it wasn't a fluke.
