105 gr amax

hey fellas, have any of you had experience with the 105 amax for prairie dogs? and approximately what velocity do you think i can achieve with the 6x47 lapua. need another p-dog rifle and want this one to be long range. Thanks men, SPM

Not a dumb question. Sorry but i can't help with details. I do not shoot 6 X 47. I do shoot a similar caliber, the 6mm WOA and have found that in my rifle the 105 A-Max shoots best at around 2750. The accuracy is there for a prarie dog sized target but cannot vouch for the terminal performance on a critter.

SPM, I have some loaded for my 6 X 47 Shehane but have not tried them yet. I have shot the 105 Berger VLDs and clocked them at 3060 fps as an average back in 85 degree weather with 41.0 gr. of VV-560 and CCI 450 primers. I think I am going to try 42.0 gr. of VV-560 now that the weather has cooled off but you will want to back off to say maybe 39.5 or 40.0 at most with the Hornady 105 A-max. The bearing surface is longer on that bullet than the Berger 105 VLDs. Hope this helps. Happy T-day man. Bill

Folks if you find out how they work on the critters be sure to post the results! I figure it will make the little critters dead but I wonder about what happens after the bullet hits? I shoot the V-Maxes from the 223 and 17 Rem but I'm looking to stretch the range a bit this year and I'd rather not send bullets into the next county! cows are not cheap and it tends to upset farmers if you kill a cow I hear. What is your rate of twist? I tried them in a .243 A.I. with a 1:10 rate of twist and was not happy with the results. I think a 1:8 rate of twist would be much better.

chino69, my barrel is a 27" Broughton 1-8 twist. Looking at the box it states that a 1-9 twist is recommended, with that 1-10 I'd look at the 87gr. my 1-10 788 freakin' loved the 70gr. Nosler BT's! the praire dogs did not care much for them but I didn't get many complaints Later,

I shoot them out of a 243 ack 30" Hart 1-9" twist and they shoot great. They will blow dogs up out to 600yds. This is my go to gun at anything over 500yds. It will really put the smack down on the close dogs too. Mine shoots best at around 3200 fps. There is no better bullet for varmints in the 6mm caliber. Sierra and Bergers both print great on paper but they just don't give the expansion at long ranges.
