Kenny, that 3rd deer I shot in the head, YES, on purpose. It was Dark Thirty in the woods off another stand and I did not want to chance any tracking so when that deer came by and turned my way, my 6-24x40 SF 4200 w/Mil dot was cranked on 6x, could make out my CH fine and just put it right on her head, lights out. Zero meat loss. If in the day, I might have neck shot her. In more open places and at longer range I would go for the lungs.
Shot a fox and coyote from the same stand and hour apart one am, the fox on the run around 100 yds, about cut him in half, the coyote, in the chest, he turned upside down, no exit, around 65 paces.
My Bobcat, angled from rear raking thru to off shoulder, nickel sized exit, dumped most all energy into the cat, DRT, range LRF around 168 yds IIRC. I have a BEAUTIFUL Bobcat in full mount now
That 105 is a nice bullet when you use it while keeping it's short range limitations in check. At long range, opens well and holds up better.
Yeah, I from memory, I think that's the only deer I headshot, but I did get a yote around 176 yds LRF in the head. Turned around and saw him looking at me, frozen facing me on a road, put that 6-24 on around 12-16x and it never knew what hit him.
That 6BR was one lucky rifle that year, shot alot of game, inc. a corn robbing coon that was again at the same spot I dropped my bobcat. Never missed, its accuracy was one heck of a confidence builder! My buddy who owned the farm land was very impressed with my shooting that year!
FWIW, my load 28.5 Varget naked Amax clocked 2850mv.
