1035 yard bear

To the clowns here who know nothing about prairie dogs from a mile to 2 miles and say you can't see them or hit them be careful about yapping about something you obviously know nothing about. By the way numerous kills on prairie dogs with a factory model 70 stealth 308, between 1000 and 1400 yards. You just need to get off your asses and put the time in!!!

Great shot on the bear!!
That’s some great shooting with a factory model 70 .308. What bullet, powder, primer, case are you using? What is the muzzle velocity? What scope are you using? Again great shooting. I had some doubts at first, I stand corrected.

There must be thousands of us who have shot long range...or at least past 1000 yds alot, and belonged to the Varmint Hunters club years ago, know that hitting a target as large as a bear at 1000 yds is not a big deal...today I'd be more impressed if the hit was at 3000 yds or more, with all that electronic gear, specialized equipment, and backup shooting support team.
But equally impressed with the lack of respect for big game animals...sniping big game, calling it hunting, always reflects negativly on the character (hunter?) just a shooter in my mind...not even good sniper skills. Just shooting and most everyone does that...regardless of range, sometimes we hit, sometimes we miss.
I've been asked to do it by fellow shooters/ hunters yrs ago..."it would be easy for you to kill that antelope, they just stand there and look at you at 850 yds", I was told. But I never took them up on the offer.
I spent many years shooting long range in the mountains...I know 1000 yd shooting and how fast the wind changes, out across canyons it's often blowing in the opposite direction it is at your location. The 1.2 to 1.4 seconds it takes the bullet to get there can easily cause wounding, a gust and you're easily 3 feet off. And tested soft Nosler BT and Match bullets failed to expand at 950 to 1000 yds, just the rifling on the bullets plastic tips completely intact. For some reason this has become fairly popular as an ego stroker, but you can do the same thing on steel or paper...and more folks will consider you "the man."
This has been outlawed in my state...no electronics devices to help you shoot big game, range finders, electronic scopes, calls, etc...a trail cam not attached to you or your rifle is the only legal electronic device for several years now...
They expect the hunter to actually grab his traditionally scoped rifle, or iron sighted lever gun and hit the brush or walk abandoned logging roads...Can't even load your gun next your vehicles and benches. They changed the shooting of big game back to hunting big game...less wounded animals. At first I was concerned, but now I'm glad they did...the game commission here has a dim view of such practices, they observed the aftermath of the long range big game shooting practices that swept across the country...and it's danger to other hunters as the ranges increase...3 seconds of bullet flight...or more..and another hunter, or snow machine, maybe skiing, appears into the field of view of your scope tracking the animal, or out enjoying the snow but you just pulled the trigger...been there... with an ATV racing down a dead end logging road toward my target...it's the longest 2.4 seconds of my life.
Lots of people these days and many don't stay in their designated recreational spots...happens quite often... ride up on off road vehicles and look at the target I'm shooting at ... hunting season can be rather crowded on public lands...even then people are in areas where they are not authorized to be in. Be carefull...you have hearing protection and they are many times on noisy machines, with helmets not paying attention, with a narrow field of view and concentrating on the scope reticle...a potential for disaster...especially on public lands.
Not even good sniper skills???? Lack of respect for the animal???? Your an ass-hat, that’s my opinion….we all have our opinions, this “ guy “ that you are talking about my friend has taken more game still hunting with snow on their back laying their beds, etc than most people dream of ( and he has the walls to prove it ) oh, and so do I….his son! He HAS TREMENDOUS respect for the game we pursue, we as hunters should respect all types of hunting and not bash each other ( there is enough of that out there with the anti hunters and gun right activist. One other thing, this style of hunting has increased the years an older hunter can get out and hunt also we take handicap people and wounded warriors ). If you want, go back to using a spear…… but don’t bash us for what we do!

Just a little clarity here, so you have shot prairie dogs from 1 to 2 miles?
And 1000 and 1400 yard kills with a factory 70 in 308 ?

Another thing Ray123…..don’t talk about something you don’t know about…. For instance…. The picture of the bear not being field dressed, waste of meat and trophy ….THAT picture was taken 1 hour and 10 minutes after he pulled the trigger on the bear ( when myself and the crew got it out ) AND if your talking about the picture on the scale, well my friend……THAT was at the butcher shop AFTER the PA game Commission checked it in and inspected it….AND it was field dressed!

We have numerous kills from one mile to 2300 yds. We were never lucky enough to kill anything at 2 miles. I took our bullet 9 seconds to get to 2 miles and as we all know prairie dogs don't stand still very long. And yes numerous kills with the 308 from 1,000 to 1400.

At 1400 yards the .308 Winchester will have a drop of 60 feet and 600 ft lb of energy. I also have a Nightforce 12x42X56 you must have had at least a 40 MOA rail to reach that distance. Great shooting again, I am impressed.

Well, being an old farm boy and hunting for many years....we bleed, gut, and skin immediately...including hunting debone and pack it out. Your bear is whole and complete with skin on...tells me all I need to know..and that is a fact. Just drove over an thew it in the truck look... hunter.
Hope you eat it all...and the dogs get none...bear is not tasty even when properly care for.
I obviously do not support long range killing of big game...for many obvious reasons. But the insistent bosting and photos catch the attention of those who shut down such activities. It happens each year...millions of acres shut down. "They" find a way, endangered species is one for PDs, Yearly Coyote calling competition shut down. Huge fines for unclear hunting laws, especially with respect to minor in possession of a firearm in the field, no ectronic gagets, no sent, guns, vehicles, and roads, no dogs for bear and cougar, no bait plus a host of others. It's only a matter of time and big game sniping has gone... too far...no atta boy...just disdain. As arrogance and boastful pictures posted, in the end, that will ruin it for all. They are watching, safety, ethics, responsibility to care for the "harvested animals" counts. Paint a different picture..if you care to continue, and without a gory pictures of a dead animals. They already hate you...I may be a PITA but I'm mostly on your side...just like to limit the distance...like a self imposed abortion distance issue, without all the grotesque dead pictures and all the bosting about how long you went before termination. He who can not harvest inside 500 yds is a very poor hunter...and has no hunting skills...right after hunting season I drove my truck into a herd of 12 to 15 elk the closest cow was about 15 yards...she stopped chewing and starred at my truck with 3 guys in it..
Just the facts, time will pass, none of it matters...nothing you accomplish will be remembered, most of which has already been done...and you don't write history...like the now love, than to hate, history of George Washington is now evolving, and being rewritten.

Don't be an a$$ if you want to harp about the bear not being properly cared for maybe you should check the game laws for PA. YOU MUST HAVE THE BEAR FIELD DRESSED AND TAKEN TO A STATE GAME CHECK STATION WHERE IT'S WEIGHT IS RECORDED AND A TOOTH IS PULLED.
You think by posting a photo of game lawfully taken and how it was taken is boasting you are sadly mistaken. It,'s just sharing an experience that others may be interested in. From the majority of the responses they have been positive. There are a few with you being the biggest a$$ of them all that spread bull sh!t about lawfully taken game.

Your response is very revealing...you can not handle realty, logical thinking, and the truth, through the dark cloud of selfishness and self identity.
Too bad there are others, boasting and promoting these unethical hunting practices. It's all about you, and not the big game animals, I find that appalling.
You have to choose to shoot the unethical 1000 yd shot, when you could walk, drive, or horseback, easily to within shooting distance...but you chose to highlight yourself...look at me aren't I great.
No, you are actually an egotistical, unethical shooter of big game, who chose to be that way.
Not a hunter, in any stretch of my imagination, not even close...never even tried to hunt...just a shooter, presented no hunting skills, and little respect for big game ...you shared nothing but how pathetic and small your hunting skills are. So no matter how tall your stories get, or how many excuses you throw out...you will always be a pathetic shooter with no hunting skills...I bow hunted for 10 yrs...ever heard of stalking big game? Part of hunting....might try it some time, more enjoyable too, and get the real experience of ...hunting.

Ray,
Appropriate name. Is your last name Charles ? Sure would be fitting if it is. Your Blind. You live that way and guessing you have your whole life. Your missing the forest for the trees. Sportsman come in many different forms. Go beat up on some archers that shoot deer at 50 -100 yards with their crossbows. That form of hunting is no different but I'm guessing you don't even pay attention to the number of deer wounded by this method of hunting. WJM IS a Sportsman. This is a LONG RANGE HUNTING FORUM. Take off your shades and let your seeing eye dog read the title for you. Its all about hunting and killing animals at LONG RANGE. Maybe you need to go find a Knitting forum. Some place where you probably won't get any resistance from that group of members.

Has any one in Oregon reported a patient walking off without their meds. Asking for some friends in PA. Jeff

I’ll tell you what. PM. me and I’ll offer you a place to stay and we’ll go still hunting next deer season in PA and at the end of the week we’ll see who has the biggest buck. NO LONG-RANGING will be involved. It’s time to put money where your mouth is.

Well don't bears have rights?

"Mr. President, we have to give bears the right to vote -- or bears will rise up and then BEARS will be in congress and we will be the ones performing in the circus, wearing little hats." Matthew Perry "Almost Heroes"
