1010 yard kill

How do you get the range on something so small?
Most commercial civilian range finders don't work well with shallow grazing angle targets.

For those times you have to learn how to pick terrain or features nearby that will give a good range return, then estimate to your actual target.

We had to find a good vantage point, and setup with the wind as much as possible. On that spot I was able to consistently range mounds out to 1200+ yards. Often times a miss would end in failure because the dog would run to another mound or dive for cover. I got lucky on this one. Ranged the mound at 1013. First shot was a bit high, and the dog didn’t move. Thinking back, probably because I didn’t account for the down angle. Made one small adjustment, second shot was left by only an inch or two. He ran away and then came back to same spot. Put the crosshair on right side of his body and toppled him.
We drove out to the mound and then ranged back to the hill we were sitting on. 1010 yds from the dog to the bench. Definitely some luck involved, but a lot of practice and effort too (and money). :) Lots of celebration that night.

Just returned from 4 days shooting in SD. Lowest numbers we’ve seen in this area, forced a lot of shots over 400 yds. Spent some time on a large town and killed numerous dogs over 700 yds. After many years (and rounds) of trying, I finally made the 1000 yard club with this kill at 1010 yds. Took three shots. 6BR, 87 grain v-max at 3150 fps. 340 inches of drop.

I aint buying it. Everybody knows a Savage can’t shoot that good!

(Congrats man)

My vote would be for 6br, 6xc or 6CM. All shoot exceptionally well. 6xc and 6CM will probably be easier to get to feed and have a bit more capacity to run 100+gr bullets if you wanted.

Good job great shot

The Fury 5000 rangefinder binoculars work Great! Took a pair this year and had zero issues--they did the job and made it easy. I had a Leica 1200--but it was no match for the Fury--
Congrats on that shot! What a goal you checked off--that smile says it all!
