1000yd 6.5x47

After much reading
and input from Erik i,m just not seeing how lil 6.5x47 would not be competitive @ 1k

i looked 6.5x55 but thou good has brass flow issues, as stated by several here

6.5x55BJ pert same as 6.5-284, including barrel life

6.5-257AI still interests me via 6.5GAP

However given i will be running a 30" barrel 140vlds, 2900-2950fps should be very doable. Again reading here and other sites seems most run 140 2850-2950 including 6.5-284 drivers. Both H4350 and more so Rl17 will yield 2900fps+, based on emails with Erik RL17 should do 2950fps+ or basically 6.5-284 match fps
Hopefully 2500 rounds barrel life or more
Enlighten me as to error in my thinking
TIA
Karl

No doubt the nut behind trigger is biggest variable

mind if i ask what load you shot?

Many say 140 is to much and was part of that group until i read Eriks RL17 results

Karl-
Anything that will drive a 140 6.5 bullet at 2900+ will not have a great barrel life. 800-1000 rounds of top accuracy is the ballpark for 6.5-284s so 1500 rounds or more is wishful thinking

Like most things in life, ya get nuthin for nuthin

Run a Rock Creek 32" 1:8 twist 5R stainless that is chambered in 6.5x55 AI. No brass flow issues running 142 gr SMK's at 2950.

All of the bullets are coated with WS2/Danzac. H4831 seems to be a very accurate powder.

I know everyone is gunning for the 140 class bullet but I recently switched back to 123gr Lapua Scenar. In both my 6.5* 284 barrels they outshoot the heavier class bullet by 0.1-0.2moa but also for my loads have better ballistics.
Below is an excel spreadsheet with comparison. My 142gr sierra mk load was at 2920fps and my 123 scenar load is 3120 (in one barrel) and 3150 (in the other). By my undertstanding these velocities should be acheivable in a well built 6.5*47 Lapua
At 1000 yards the 123 Scenar is supposedly 42 inches higher and has 3.6 inches less wind drift at 10mph. I use these two tables for come up and they are pretty close - maybe Sierras are slightly better than this (just) but for all intensive purposes they are pretty close. Trajectory aside I cannot tell them apart in wind drift.

The 142's shoot superbly in some rifles but not as well as the scenars in mine. I have ordered some 6.5*47 reamers and can't wait to give it a try and I will be using it out to 1000. plus making a hunting repeater as well. A very exciting cartridge.

Chris - in this case I think you actually do get something and you get it with change.
Efficiency of the cartridge has a massive effect on barrel life. Heat energy, pressure and friction do the barrels in. A more efficient cartridge has far less waste energy. Wasted energy is given off as heat so a more efficient cartridge gives off less heat. Now I take your point pushing out a big pill through small diameter at high speed will do barrels in but comparatavely the 6.5*47 will be much better. Not only do you have a saving on barrel but powder as well.

Maybe 1500+ is a good estimate I am sure we will start to here back soon as everyone starts to shoot their barrels out but 1500 compared to my current 7-800 is huge. Especially when you consider it can take me 1-200 shots to run barrel in and develop a load so you are really comparing 5-700 of usable barrel life to 1400+ and with less cost to reload. at $400 a barrel that is a saving of well over 30c a shot (maybe higher and with less powder and recoil).
I would call that something.

Wow - I use 54.5 gr 4831 to do same job in 6.5*284

and that would be another advantage - I get back to varget which is what I use in my 308, 6BR, 204 etc. and bulk buy for a further saving.

That is why the 6.5x47 works well out to 1k.

And that's why I shoot a 6.5x47 :D

I should have said 3000+ vel with a 140 which a Lapua is not realistically capable of. My main gunsmith quickly found that the AI Swede case is not signif better than the .284 version in barrel life which isn't very surprising..

It was a wet winter, I have never seen Palmdale that green. I will have to get up that way for a match. I see that there is a 1000 yard match 29 August. It is a long drive from San Diego but for a good reason. ;)
