1000 yard caliber, low recoil, long barrel life

hi everyone...

I was talking to borden today about getting a custom built gun going....id like to hear what people would recomend for a 1000 yard capable caliber with consideration to low recoil and long barrel life. 1000 yard paper punching, not hunting.

i was considering 6.5-284 (too short of barrel life i think) 7-08, and 6.5x47 to name a few... also it would be good if lapua made the brass for it and or i could just resize the neck to get to the caliber.- ie 308 to 7-08. im trying to avoid any crazy wildcats.

Never had a 6.5-47L, but they sound OK.

6-6.5x47L ...Just neck down the parent 6.5 case and shoot. Very simple. More and more of them every day.

6mm Dasher...I know you're not crazy about the FF part of it, but even I can do it. If you do any casual shooting (prairie dogs. steel, f class...ect...) this is where you can do your FFing. My FF loads are right at 2800 FPS and are 1/4 moa out to as far as I have shot them!!! My "competition" groups at 100 were .20 and .21 inches. the 3 shot groups out to 500 were all 1/4 min or less.

hey Erik, what ranges are you shooting the 6.5x47 in your competition shooting... do you go to 1000 with it or do you use 6.5-284? thank you for the reply.

I have 6BR, 6 Dasher, 6.5x47, and .284 Shehane.

Buy the 6 Dasher.

I shoot it out to 1000. I had not shot it in a while, took it to the monthly 1000 yard match and shot three different loads, they all shot good. I ended up fourth for the day, second and third place went to 7 mm's, and first place went to a 6.5x47. So they can be competitive. I don't have a 6.5-284, the only 6.5 I have is the "47"

The 6.5x47 will have better barrel life than the 6mm version.

I was in the same boat a year ago. Was thinking I wanted a 6BR. Erik Cortina was kind enough to let me shoot his 6.5x47 in a 1,000 yd match and I was hooked. Got my own 6.5x47 a month later. Do it, you will not be disappointed. Easy to load for. I shoot free recoil, no busted brows....yet. Very mild recoil.

Ask Erik to post the "rookie 7 shot group.". It will show you how tight the 6.5x47 will shoot at 1,000.

This is the thread where I posted the picture.

The center hole for the spindle is one, the other six are visible on the spotter. Some he caught the edge, but still hit it.

I would have to agree with Erik and the rest of the guys. The 6.5x47 is pretty tough to beat. And you don't have to push it to the raged edge to get great results.

I have one now and am waiting on parts for my second one. It's a fantastic round.

I shoot my 6.5x47 @ 600 and 1000. I do very well with it. I run the berger 130's. The new gun I will try and run some 140's.

Don't forget the Rem .260 (Lapua Brass now available) -- Sherri G. did pretty well with it at Perry!

For more capacity consider the 6.5x55, 6.5x55AI, 6.5-284.

I like the .284 Shehane for 1K F-Class open. Others go straight to the 7mm RSAUM or 7mm WSM (Norma brass).

These are just 2 reasons why I chose the .260 in transforming one of my Savages into long range capable. Just putting the finishing touches on it today. I bought a box of CorBon ammunition made with Lapua Brass and Lapua 139 Scenar to shoot while I wait for more reloading supplies. I have high hopes, even with the factory ammo.

Have fun with whatever cartridge you choose!

well i wanted to go with something that was light recoil... i have a 300 win mag right now that has no problems going out pretty far but i just don't "enjoy" shooting it over and over id like a caliber that is more pleasant to shoot ie- less recoil... the other aspect was that jim bordan told me i was looking at about a 9 month to 1 year wait... i don't want to get something that im going to torch the barrel out fast and then have to send the gun out and wait for long periods of time to have a new barrel fitted...

anybody know what the barrel life is like on the 7 saum and the 6 dasher?? also who makes dies for the dasher?? thanks

there are lots of good choices....that is why I use a Kelbly action....I have 3 of em and can change bbls between them and can have a bbl chambered without sending my rifles and where or doing without them for a day....just get the cal I want ,,any thing from ppc/BR and all the vairiants to the .308/243/260 group to the .284 and its children to the 06 family (280 AI etc) .....just change the bbl in aprox 5 min...easier than a Savage and not problem with headspace (its built in!!)....but out of all of em ..I like the 6mm BR best ....accurate,ez on bbls,,cheap to shoot ,,,long bbl life...what more culd U ask...Roger
