1000 yard bench rest wind flags

Are personal wind flags legal in IBS and NBRSA 1000 yard bench rest? If so do you use them? Please describe what you do and why or what you do not do and why. Thanks

IBS:
1250 Wind Flags 1251 Range-owned wind flags are placed at Range owner’s discretion, and should be placed where 1252 observable by all competitors on an equal basis. 1253 In the 600 Yard discipline, wind flags of any size may be placed by competitors no higher than 1254 the line between the highest point of bench top to bottom of target along the line of sight seen 1255 through the scope. 1256 Except as provided for below, personal wind flags will be restricted to within the competitive 1257 shooting lane of the competitor placing the flags. A shooting lane is defined as the centerlines 1258 between benches to the centerline between the targets unique to each competitor. 1259 Competitors may place personal wind flags off to the side of the range; that is, left of the left1260 most bench on the range, and/or right of the right-most and right-most bench being used on a 1261 given day at the tournament. 1262 After the first shot of the aggregate, including the warm-up match (should one be conducted), 1263 flags may only be moved by Referees under the direction of the Range Officer. In no 1264 circumstance shall any flag be moved for the shooter’s convenience or benefit for the remainder 1265 of that aggregate. If a flag is causing an obstruction for any shooter, range personnel will lay 1266 down the flag and pole in question. At any tournaments where multiple aggregates are being 1267 contested on the same day, flags may be moved and/or adjusted by competitors between 1268 aggregates. 1269 Electronic Wind Gauges. Electronic wind gauges are not allowed
NBRSA:1.5.12. There shall be no communication between the pits and line by Competitors at any time by any method. This includes, but is not limited to electronic or manual means, cell phones, cameras or videos. Competitors found doing this shall be disqualified from the tournament. In addition all targets shot by Competitors shall also be removed from any record or tournament consideration. 1.5.13. Competitors are allowed to place their own range flags if desired. No Competitor may post or adjust flags during the day of competition until the days record strings are completed. The Competitor is restricted to placing flags in their shooting lane. Their shooting lane is defined as the centerline between adjacent benches. 1.5.14. Flags must be no higher than level of bench-top to bottom of target. The Tournament Director may order a flag be laid on the ground upon verification that the flag is interfering with a shooter or outside the proper shooting lane. Flags must be left on the range until the completion of the day’s record strings. 1.5.15. Designation of shooting positions and relays shall be determined by blind draw or other random method by the Host Club. The number of relays is determined by the number of days the tournament is held and the number of Competitors. Typically, in a one day tournament, there are two relays, one on the shooting line and one in the pits

I don't but I'm a kibitzer. I do have regular access to a thousand yard range when I have the patience to use it with others on the range and if I spent enough time with my own flags AND my own remote reading Kestrel bluetooth et al on my own range to do more than wishful thinking, that is if I had the skills to be my own coach I would. As it is any more information is just more overload. At home electronic aids Dwyer or other gages make a difference between plinking and practicing. At some point more information becomes meaningful and at that point consistency from using the same flags would matter. I guess I boil it down to where I know the range of course use the flags that taught me the range, where I don't know the range I'm a kibitzer.

Your typical flags get hard to see past 300yds. The large range flags are not very responsive. When I used to shoot at a range that was pretty flat and mainly shot midrange where the bullets trajectory was pretty low I had a set of socks I made up. They were white, about 4 feet long similar in design to an airport wind sock but very light so they were responsive and you could easily read them at 600yds. I shot well using them and no doubt it improved my groups. Now I mainly shoot 1k at a range thats not flat and I shoot much better reading mirage that watching those low flags. Now, that does not mean I dont like flags. You have to learn how to read your range. We still put out a lot of flags but if the flags disagree with the mirage I will shoot the mirage at this range. The more data the better so put them out.

At the 1000 yard IBS national did anybody set up personal wind flags? The problem for me with using the mirage with my rifle scope is the barrel heat and once the wind get above apx 8 mph the mirage flat lines. Alex when you are reading the mirage are you using your rifle scope or a spoting scope?

I dont know, I was in the scoring shack and not on the line much.
I am reading it with my scope. At deep creek theres a cut in the timber right in front of the targets where a lot of wind comes through. Theres another at midrange and theres flags usually set there. You just have to learn the range and where the main pushes come from.
