The new Alpha 1 appears to have addressed the ills of the later 700's.Years ago I would have said Remington but that day has passed.
1950 mod 70, 375 H&H bought used in Alaska in 1974 from an old trapper who bought it new in Anchorage, said he had hunted with it for over 20 years and was doubling his money on it, I paid him $400 for it. Picked up another one in 300H&H also made in 1950 to hunt in the lower 48 with in the late 70s because I liked the other one so well, paid $700 for that one, but it was still in the box... JohnHow about less than $1K?

I have a few pre '64's. My first was a 270fwt I bought out of Shotgun News. I've added a couple over the years. I have to say when FN took production so South Carolina they made a rifle every bit as nice as the pre 64's. I'm not sure about what they produce today but I got a couple from that era I love. .257 Roberts featherweight is my favorite.1950 mod 70, 375 H&H bought used in Alaska in 1974 from an old trapper who bought it new in Anchorage, said he had hunted with it for over 20 years and was doubling his money on it, I paid him $400 for it. wow! I have never owned one but heard great things. I am definitely leaning towards one in 308.Tikka Hands down the most accurate smoothest rifle out of the box you can buy. Here is a 5 shot group shot from a factory T3 Hunter with the walnut stock. Bone stock, no bedding, no trigger spring nothing. All I did was mount a Leupold scope on it and take it to the range. I have done load development on multiple Tikka rifles and every one of them have shot half inch or better.
