10-10 and 5-10 Scales

How do you know where they were made?
Marked on the scale?
Marked on the box?
What should I look for?
I would like to find a 10-10 or a 5-10 but I want a scale made here in the states.
Any information or help would be appreciated

Thanks.
Sam.

That is the same dilemma I have been having. From what I have learned here and other places, the RCBS scales should be printed on the box “Made in……”. I recently picked up a like new RCBS 5-0-2 that I thought was made in USA however, it turned out it said made in Mexico on the bottom of the box. The scale actually checked out really nice from what I could tell and seems to be accurate and sensitive. I would also like to add a 10-10 to my collection but have been hesitant because I’m not sure how to tell where they are made. According to forum member 1066 all of the RCBS 5-10 scales were made in the USA so that takes some of the guesswork out of them. Don’t rule out an Ohaus 505 scale. I just picked up a nice example and had some time over the weekend to clean it up and check it out. So far, I think this is my favorite of all four scales that I have. Once I got it leveled and the pan re-zeroed it proved to be very repeatable and sensitive to one grain of Varget.

I could be wrong but I believe the 5-10 was never made anywhere but here until discontinued. Might be wrong on this too but the solid aqua green 10-10s were made here also.

I just got this nice 5–10 scale the other day. The box didn’t particularly say “Made in….”, it just had its standard statement of manufactured exclusively for RCBS by Ohaus corporation. I spent a couple hours the other night cleaning it up and looking it over. I did have to level the scale and re-balance the pan but that seems to be pretty common with these types of scales from what I have read. I also had to slightly bend the copper blade that passes through the magnets as it wasn’t centered very well and would lightly rub on the rear magnet. The scale checked out nicely with my check weights however I would say that it is not quite as sensitive as my Ohaus 505. It does react to one kernel of Varget but not like the 505. It could be that the knives just need some more touching up.7A5657B8-1AAD-4AFE-B43F-833B197B68E8.jpegCB08FC3A-0ECC-4CDC-8BA1-868C9AF2D08F.jpeg

I’m pretty sure this old light green 5-0-5 was made in America. The markings on the scale and the box seem to imply that it was made in Union, NJ. I picked it up at estate sale a while back.

Scott Parker is the expert on these. I'm sure if this post stays up long enough he'll chime in.
I think Ohaus made most RCBS beam scales. Modern day I'd say most are made in china, it's a cost and profit issue I'm sure.
