1 SCREW OR 2 FOR SCOPE MOUNT SCREWS?

Two piece scope rings are offered with either 1 screw or two screws. I would like to use a set that has 1 screw. Would there be any problem on a rifle such as a 30BR?

How about one per side on steel, and two per side on aluminum?

I've used some cheap crap aluminum ring sets for 22 rimfire application before, and I'd never trust a two screw cap on them. Hell, they start stripping at about 12 inch pounds of torque.

Y'all might find this hard to believe, but I've been known to cheap-out on some occasions. ;) jd

if by two screw you mean 2 screws each side of the scope cap, most refer to them as 4 screw. That would be my choice vs 2 screw, always has been in the IBS score game.

The reason for my question had to do with trying to move the scope back as far as possible. I have a Leupold Competition 45X scope mounted on a Panda action using the double screw Harrell rings. I would like to move the scope back for a more comfortable eye relief position. The single screw should allow the scope to move rearward slightly, and every bit will help.

Using offset rings helped a little, and I think the single screw will help more. I received a new single screw offset from Harrells. A little bit of nice weather will also help.

When I was referring to one or two screws, it was about the clamping number of screws in each base.

I think it depends on a few factors. Most of the time, singles are fine but I had a Stiller Viper in both 30BR and 30 Major that I fought this with for a bit. Those actions are basically a Panda clone but are hard coat anodized. That hard anodizing was tough to grip vs a Panda or other bare aluminum base. The combination of the recoil and scope weight of a NF BR 12-42 was enough on that action to give me fits until I stopped it. Even double screw rings, I had to keep an eye on, so I made a stop on the rear ring that wouldn't allow the scope/rings to slide forward on the integral base. I coulda pinned it but I was a little concerned about it affecting resale value. Absolutely nothing wrong with doing it otherwise.

With a Leupold comp and a set of either combo or double screw rings, I doubt you'll have any problem on most non anodized dovetail bases. Bare vs anodized makes a lot more difference than I woulda thought....fwiw.

I've seen combo rings, but I don't think Harrell's off-set rings come as a combo. I now have both the double and single off-set 30mm rings and have thought about mix and matching rings, but I am under the impression their rings come in matched pairs, so that doesn't work.

I assume that I could mill 1/2 off the lower part of a rear base of a double and have the same thing as a combo. I will try the singles first. Cutting one of Harrell's rings would be a last resort.

Call Harrells. They do combos..or did.

Harrels does, both 30mm & 1". Currently out of stock on the 30mm sets.
