1 in 17 twist 308

I have a 1 in 17" in 300 Blackout. I'm going to use 100 grain Lapua bullets in the 2300 fps range. Going to use it in our club matches. 200 Yards off hand.

Are you really talking about a 1/17 twist barrel or do you mean a 1/7 twist ? I don't think I have ever seen or heard of a 1/17 twist in 308 win.

I don’t think I‘ve ever seen a 1/7 twist .308. I’ve seen a lot of 1/17 twist.308 barrels. Mostly chambered for .30BR.

Make it a 30BR with the 112 to 118 grain bullets and really have fun with it! Especially if you are just paper punching!!

I'm thinking of putting a 17 twist 308 together for shooting paper with light 115-125 grain bullets at 100-200 yards? Would this make a pretty accurate combo or not such a good idea?

I have thought about putting that setup on my 30/378 Weatherby. I’ve got a 13” twist Bartlein and I’m going 4,130 fps with the Nosler 125 now. It would be interesting to see what kind of velocity I could get. I’ll say this about it now. It is not a meat gun. Unless you’re a buzzard or a hog!! But I love it like a fat gal. When you see what I can do!! The biggest grin!! You will have!!

Wilson Combat determined that the optimal barrel twists for 300HAM’R are (1) 1:13 twist for 130gr - 160gr .308 bullets and (2) 1:15 twist for 90-130gr .308 bullets.

I was focused on the lighter bullet group, specifically 110gr - 125gr, so I selected a 1:15.

A 1 in 10 is a bit over-stabilized for everything but heavy for caliber bullets. A 1 in 12 is a better choice for 170 grain and under. I've no experience with light for cartridge loads such as 125s. If it were me, I'd probably not consider anything under a 1 in 14 for a .308 case, and I'd have to think hard about that.

Pretty much correct. Twist rate is based on the bullet jacket length not the weight. Freebore determined pretty much by the bullet length...you don't want a long bullet seated into the powder column too far if at all.
