1-9" .22-250

I've picked up a 1-9" .22-250 just to see what's what. Throat is a tad long. I'm thinking 75 eld, but I'd like to hear what the go to powder might be. R17? H4350?, N150?

I'm mostly wondering about optimum powder for 75's. I've got 69s, and a bunch of different 75's to try. If they work they work, if not I'll try something else. I've already determined that 75 berger stabilizes just fine, but the throat is longer than optimal for it. The longer shank on the eld has me thinking.

H4350 would fit into the Optimum powder category for the 22-250 with 75 ELDs. I shoot it alot with that bullet. Gives great accuracy and velocity. Works in the Ackley just as well.

Not the usual suspect, but I got my best accuracy with 75gr Amaxes from R15. Velocity was pretty much equal to what 4350 would give me, but of course, with a smaller charge. I predict you’ll find accuracy from 33 to 33.6gr. Warm load, so work up to it.

Reloader 15 is a well known 22-250 powder. Works best with the heavier bullets. I've never used it with any regularity as it didn't give my personal rifle the best accuracy in years past. Now that I shoot the Ackley, I stick with mostly H4350 and RL23. Lots of good 22-250 powders out there. Too many to try really.

I don't think finding a powder will be hard, but the length of the throat may pose a challenge. A 75 amax at the lands is only into the case less than 0.125". Certainly maximizes availible powder space, but we'll see how it shoots.

75/80 Amax/ELDs are very tough to beat really. No maybe they can't compare to Berger's in competition BUT in the field they are the best of all of them. Mainly because they are priced very reasonably and they shoot very good and consistent as a hunting/varmint bullet.

The story goes that Bruce Hodgdon used it (H380) in the .22-250 along with 52 grain bullets and it shot so well with 38.0 grains that he named it that.

I use RL15 with a 68/69gr BTHP for a fire forming load in my AI, and use AR Comp in my fast twist 22-250 with 69gr TMKs.

That being said, I think I'd look towards the 77gr SMK to get closer to the lands. Just a thought..

I have a .22-250 that I have not shot in years. It sports a 1-9 twist. I can tell you that the Berger 73gr boattail is about the MOST accurate bullet you can shoot out of it. I used IMR 4007, which is no longer available. It was incredibly accurate with that powder. A 22-250 is "made for speed" and utilizing that speed for varmints or Deer is an asset. Two powders close in burn rate to 4007 that would produce both speed and accuracy is VV N550 and RL-16. I don't believe you could do better!
