1/4 moa vs .1mil adj on scope

If you want to use a variable power scope to shoot at small targets a long way off, that would seem to be the logical conclusion.

Thanks! At the other forum I frequent they always promote the FFP. But I guess that's just for the ranging capabilities.

I'm finding that my FFP with the Mildot reticule is maybe not the best for what I want to do.

a few friends and myself don't punch paper, however we do shoot p-dogs(at 1000+ yards) they are 9" tall..... we also shoot coyotes and they can't get too small in a scope for me not to throw lead and copper at them.....first focal all the way......some of us started with second focal but soon changed.....
second focal is cheaper (not by much)and usually more hassel to use because of only one power to range at..... check out vortex 6-24 x 50 first focal.........
oh yeah by the way what happens when your electric windows won't work or your battery goes dead on your bestest ever range finder and your out in the middle of the boonies ?????

Let me get this straight. You are ranging prairie dogs that are hundreds of yards distant using a mil dot reticle? If my calculations are correct, at 600 yards a mil is 21.6 inches and at 500 yards 18 inches. You must be very good at eyeballing the fraction of a mil that a particular prairie dog represents, and quickly doing the calculation. Personally, I have never talked to a varmint hunter that used that system. What fraction of an angle does the thinnest part of your reticle subtend?

I was offered a s/h mil based FFP scope ..on trial. I'm a sloow learner, so read the book.
The various subtensions included:- 1 mil: 0.2 mil : 0.06 mil. ...
so you could split your figures by 2/10 ths ... to 4.2" and 3.6"and even judge to a smaller angle. I should add 'with practice'
I did get my head around the "if it is x mil up/down/across, then move x mil., and
I found an excellent Milrad 101 guide on the place where snipers hide.
No I didn't buy it - very tempted excellent but wasted on my needs .. but maybe one day.. ??

Thanks mike. The scopes I have now are bushnell 4200 tact 6x24 with only 48 moa. I was shooting a 8,9,1k match last month and my 308 cz with scope topped out at 900. It has a mil dot ret but my chart was in moa. Well after wasting a few shots I used 3 mil dots for 9 moa to get to 1000 not perfect but it worked .I am new to long range shooting but am hooked. I am going to try the millet on my 300 5r rem and maybe put one one of my f/tr rifles. I know the millet is not as good as my bushnells but with over 100 MOA i want to try it.

If you are shooting on NRA F-Class targets, I would choose a scope with moa adjustments since the target rings will be 1, 1/2 and 1/4 moa apart and it will be easier to make adjustments.
