06

Very cool thread. I've done casual shooting (some range time) and hunting for under 10 years now, nothing formal ever.
I'm hoping to join my local (small) bench rest league this year for the first time, if it still happens.
My plan was to use a .30-06. I have a passion for old Tikka M55 and M65 rifles, I just started load development using 165 VLD-H.

Eventually I'd like to re-barrel this rifle, possibly into a 6.5-06.

Firing an “off-the-rack” M1903 Springfield, using GI-issue “tin-plate” ammunition, George Farr shot 71 consecutive bullseyes at 1000 yards (70 for record), a record that has never been broken.

Today’s Sunday GunDay story is, literally, a blast from the past — 1921 to be precise. We feature a “magic rifle” that set one of the most impressive records in history — one that has never been broken. Here is George Farr’s legendary .30-06 M1903 Springfield. Enjoy!

The 30/06 is like the 45 ACP. Not everyone can handle them. Those that do, can do well with them.
I just load according to what the recoil tells my body is comfortable enough to shoot 25-30 rounds accurately. H4895 at about 75 percent is very mild with bullets on the light side . The old '03 is a joy to shoot .

For those concerned about recoil, I use a JP Enterprises recoil eliminator at the end of my 26" Hart 30-06 barrel. I shoot 150-200 rounds a day with it and do not end up with a sore shoulder. I typically shoot out to 900 yards with it, and find it very accurate and consistent at that range using good old Gold Medal Match 168 grain BTHP Match ammo. When I reload ammo, I use Sierra 168 grain BTHP bullets in front of Varget or IMR 4895. Both powders give me excellent performance in 30-06 at load weights that are not much more than my match loads for my .308. As far as muzzle blast due to the big 30 caliber with a brake, the 6.5 Creedmoor on either side of me at a shoot was equally as concussive. We adapted. Following is a picture of my target at 100 yards used to confirm my zero on a Sunday morning, after pushing 350 rounds through the 30-06 on Friday and Saturday, without cleaning, and before starting the last day of shooting at Thunder Ranch. The target is a standard size playing card. About the only caliber I find I shoot better is the .308, but without the recoil eliminator on my .308, I do find it leaves my shoulder a bit sore after a 100 rounds or so.
