I'd like to see a new F class Category. "F-TAC"

If you want to grow the sport (Shooting sports) you must be willing to try new things. If you loose one shooter but gain four you are better off.

Run some matches and try it. Work up some rules for the class. Such as rifle weight (Should it include the bipod or not?), What cartridges? Any thing except 223 and 308? Type of bipod? Folding bipods only? Think of who you are trying to attract and mimic that games rifle rules.

This has developed into an interesting discussion. From talking to the several F Class Shooters at my Gun Club, they are against allowing brakes.

A couple of weeks ago, at Tomball, one of my friends who has a 7mm magnum with a brake was at the range. We did a little experiment. I had my 13.5 pound HV sitting in the bags on my bench. He set up two benches down, our benches are on 8 foot centers.

I place the crosshairs of my rifle dead on, and he fired a shot. When I looked back through my scope, it had moved about 1/4 inch off point of aim. We did it several times, with the same result.

The side to side concussion was very noticeable.

But, if the same Rifle was chambered in a much smaller cartridge, like a 6BRA, the results would probably been a lot different.

I like the CIHPRS F-Practical, never shot it as I am in Texas.

I've watched these discussions come and go for over 10 years it seems.

Presently there are three ways you can shoot a sanctioned prone match, from a sling (my preference), a bipod, the definition of which has seriously morphed over the years, or, a fully adjustable front rest.

If you choose to shoot from a bipod, you are restricted to 223 or 308, to remain in the bipod class. If you choose to shoot something other than the 223 or 308, you are now shooting against all of the open class guns and the fully adjustable rests.

I like the idea of a class that is only a folding bipod without the F/TR caliber restrictions.

Brakes don't belong on the line of a prone match. There are two different shooters to consider, those who happen to have bought a gun with a brake, and those who have built a gun with a break.

The shooters that have bought a gun with a brake can be educated about their removal, and helped to re-zero. Those that built a gun with a brake already know about dope, and many of them have the dope with and without their suppressors. It's disingenuous, at best, for someone to argue that that shooter is unduly inconvenienced by removing their brake.

Also, the sanctioned prone matches under discussion are all sighter matches.

About AR Tactical, I cannot just put a bipod on my Service Rifle and go shoot an AR Tactical match with it. My Service Rifle, as shot across the course, is 4 pounds over the AR Tactical weight limit before the bipod is added. I've considered shooting it that way though, out of competition, with my wimpy 4.5 power scope against the purpose built AR Tactical rifles, for fun, of course.

I will also add, that I cannot, or at least have no desire to take my F/TR rifle and shoot it from a sling. Actually did it for one mid range prone match out of curiosity. Never again.

There is a place for a prone class shot off of folding field type bipods.

I don’t get the Belly Benchrest parallel, the two disciples really aren’t that close in comparison. We ( LRBR ) shoot group and score sitting while F class shoots only score prone.

As my old friend would say go Blasting !!! Your ears not others.

I’ve shot both PRS and F class with the same rifle.

I take the brake off. With a 419 Brake it’s easy to do and the mount stays on the rifle.

There are brakes out there that are even easier to remove.

As far as the load is concerned, in 3 different rifles I’ve not had one that I felt I needed to rework a load for to shoot with or without a brake. Maybe I’m lucky who knows. Maybe a manufacturer is reading this and will develop a brake that has a counter weight for the barrel that weighs the same as the brake and will help with harmonics…..I believe that’s been done but maybe it doesn’t work so well.

I will say it’s fun to lay down with a folding bipod and a shitty looking rear bag, a rifle that has open threads on the end of the barrel and in a space age looking chassis and beat die hard F class guys though.

I’ve said it before and will continue to preach it, the hate that comes from F class shooters towards PRS disciplines is ridiculous. I’ve been made fun of at a local club because I enjoy shooting and have dove into PRS events in both centerfire and rimfire.

Theres comments in this thread from people sitting atop the F Class “throne” so to speak talking down at the peasants that use brakes and shoot steel. “If you need a brake shoot an air rifle” was my favorite condescending remark thus far. Theres been some pissy comments from a few PRS supporters as well.

I have to just sit and shake my head.

Shooting sports need to grow. And they need to grow at a rate higher than they are now. PRS, NRL, PRO and other organizations are doing a WAY better job at growing RIFLE shooting sports than the NRA does now, and as long as I’ve been shooting.

I use a brake for my race gun but I sure wouldn’t want to be on an F Class firing line next to multiple guys running brakes. My head hurts thinking about it.

At the same time, I don’t want some pompous jerk telling me to shoot an air rifle if I can’t handle recoil. If you don’t know or understand why brakes are used in improvised positional shooting then getting out and trying it will open your eyes as to why brakes are nearly a necessity in that form of shooting.

At the same time if you think a brake doesn’t bother anyone around you I feel like you haven’t shot centerfire rifles much in your life. Especially on a firing line.

The NRA should legalize suppressors though. It’s comical they won’t do it because they’re not legal everywhere. That seems as stupid as the arguments in this thread. We don’t want brakes because “noise and booms” but we also don’t want to make guns any quieter.

I think if you want to make F Class more interesting take the sighters out, knock the time limit down to 10 minutes and make everyone set up their equipment on the clock.

Some what funny most on this site are always looking for a reason to buy/ build a new gun, they enjoy doing load development and working up “scope dope” and now they won’t rule changes so they can shoot a gun they already have and not have to change their load or “scope dope”! and if they decide they don’t like the new match they can always just put the gun in the safe with all the others they don’t shoot anymore. What am I missing?

I seldom post, but here goes an extraneous view. Scanned this string and comprehend varying views. How about Rambo wannabes, seldom competitors in any discipline, start their own clubs with their own ranges. I tire of putting up with a truckload of black gun blasters showing up to demonstrate their testosterone, or lack thereof, while us serious shooters are enjoying sport shooting……like yesterday in Tulsa.
From an older F Class, .22RF shooter, lifelong hunter with little tolerance for the Rambo wannabes.
Why would you feel the need to belittle others? That is very immature of you.
