This normal when turning necks

Sent my 6br brass out to be neck turned for me to 30BR and it came back like this. It's got huge variations in neck wall thickness and the cuts are almost all like this with big digs into the shoulder.
This normal? Anytime I've turned brass, I'll get a couple like this out of 100 but not nearly every single piece.

Did you voice your displeasure to the place that did it? Almost looks like they used an undersized mandrel.
When they saw how they were coming out, they should have stopped.
I have not yet. I wanted to get a general consensus on this before I said anything. I mean what am I going to do? They refund me for the service and then I have 150 pieces of mangled 30br brass.

Its not as bad as you think. When you neck up a 6br to a 30 br you have no control over how parrallel the neck will stay to the centerline of the case body. The brass will strech how ever it wants and will not stay centered with the shoulder. Had the turner not had a matching shoulder angle to the shoulder you wouldnt see that swipe on the shoulder and it would look nice. If you want it perferct you would need to shoot it in a no turn chamber then turn it for the tight neck chamber. I would shoot it and not worry. This is not the same as turning a 6br that has not been necked up. The whole issue is related to necking up. I dont like the cut into the shoulder, but thats why I use a 45 degree cutter on everything. Never cuts into a shoulder.

The elliptical appearance on the shoulder is due to the 6BR brass necks being expanded in too few steps and/or not enough lube for the mandrel. That appearance alone is not enough for concern, IMO, but the unequal turned neck thickness is a very good reason for concern. 30 BR's can be finicky about neck tension, and uneven neck thickness will complicate your life.

Whoever turned your cases should have told you they need to be fired once before sending them to him. Firing makes them conform better to accurate chamber dimensions. Looks like he didn't understand to just barely touch the shoulder. If they were just out of the box I would guess the necks are not very round and this could account for uneven thickness?

I got that on my virgin brass and why now I only neck turn after fire forming my brass.

I expand in several steps and go to a .312” mandrel. Then bush back down turning at min 3x to get my runout as minimal as possible. Then turn necks. Have shot very well. Definitely not arguing with anyone’s process but I don’t like traveling into the shoulder. Just my opinion.

Uneven neck thickness after turning. I always assumed the space between the turner mandrel and the blade could only turn to one thickness. Of course a loose fit on the mandrel can cause variation. It amazes me how many guys on this website have problems reloading.

My favorite comments are:
Can you anneal bullets
Should I run a fully loaded cartridge thru a FL die a second time.

Upon further inspection, I'm going to contact him and ask for my money back. I don't feel comfortable with the huge digs in every single piece and I was told that the brass would only vary .0002 in thickness and I'm getting .0009.

Not only that, but I asked for a neck wall thickness of .0102 and I'm getting some at .0109.

I thought maybe my brass got mixed with someone else's but it's the same boxes I sent out.

With some of these pieces I'd not even have enough clearance.

I don't think I could do that if I tried.

I too would ask for my money back . . . especially when getting almost .001" thickness variance. Your neck thickness shouldn't be anywhere close to that much thickness variance.

After necking up to .30, I run the cases into a BR Body Die that has a fixed .327 neck dimension. That straightens the neck relative to the case body.

With a 35 degree cutter, that gives a smooth, and symetrical, blend at the neck/shoulder junction.

If the clearance is ok when you check with a seated bullet, those necks will straighten out the first time you fire 'em.

Good shootin' :) -Al
