Disabled vet wants to try Service Rifle

Good afternoon, ladies and gents. I want to try my hand at service rifle. I was a designated marksman in the army, and I really enjoyed the school (put on by the AMU at Benning). My back is garbage thanks to an IED in 2009. I'll definitely need a coach. For one, I have no idea what I'm doing. For another, I may need to slightly modify the traditional textbook positions to work around my bad back. I live in Savannah, GA and am a member at a club which has a 500 yard range. We only shoot steel on the distance range, but targets do go down to 1 MOA, so that should be okay while I'm learning. Any advice? Do y'all know of anyone in my area who shoots service rifle? Thanks!

There are new DR badges for physically limited persons at CMP. Maybe reach out to the CMP by email. Your local club have any XTC High Power folks or anyone in the know?
Maybe the State Rifle Assoc. ??

You may want to check us out on the Nation Match Forums. It is a predominately XTC High Power group.
Lots of knowledgeable folks there and we are all over the US. May be a quick way to introduce yourself there and find help or info.

Sometimes getting an approval can be a challenge there, but our admins work hard in the background.

Couple of groups out there helping Vets with shooting sports. Veterans Family Brigade and ... I am blanking the other one.

Good luck.

If you can might be worth a trip to go to the eastern games in North Carolina. The VFB should be there?? But be plenty of folks to talk to, The CMP folks are very approachable like Brian Williams.

Start doing yoga and exercising to do what you can, not only to shoot but to feel as good as possible for life.
Find out who is involved in the state and reach out where to shoot a match. It may also be a good place to find a mentor. Typically, if you don't have equipment, loaner stuff may be available to try out.

Thank you, sir. I've always enjoyed precision rifle shooting, but I have never done so competitively. The PRS game is far outside my budget, and I like modern sporting rifles, so I'm thinking Service Rifle will be right up my alley. I did put together a 6.5cm AR10 recently which is too light to be truly competitive, but I do plan on attending a couple DMR matches close by this summer with it as well.

I did 3 years of yoga based physical therapy. I still spend 20 minutes a day stretching. I also have a spinal cord stimulator implant. I'm going to start swimming again as well.

Edit: I emailed the CMP director on Friday. Thank you!

You can, or at least used to be able to get a writeoff from a doctor that would allow you to compete in Highpower subject to your limitations. I doubt that has changed. Search the NRA competitions site.

So, I have tried reading through both the NRA and CMP rulebooks. I got a bit confused with the different rifle restrictions. I saw the M110 is listed under service rifle for NRA high power. I saw AR10 stuff listed under match for CMP, but CMP also talked about service rifles chambered in 5.56 or 7.62. Was that just because of the M1A, or are AR10s legal in CMP as well? In CMP, are 5.56 AR15s and 7.62 M1As competing against each other, or are they separate classes? The CMP rules sounded to me like guys using M1 Garands, M1A/M14s, and ARs are all competing head to head. To my novice self, that sounds like it would put Garand and M1A shooters at a distinct disadvantage. Also, are Garand and M1A shooters allowed to use scopes with the same limitations as AR15s?

In CMP matches M1 garands are used in their own matches called the garand matches. Very few people use a garand in xtc matches 200-300-600. When they do CMP seperates them from the AR15 shooters. The M1A/M14 still some die hard holdouts shooting it but they have a hard time competing with AR15 with optics. AR10 you should be fine to use it in SR matches. Mastering the recoil during rapids will take a lot practice.
