Plastic Ammo Bins

I like MTM Case-Gard. True hinge for the lid, available in 50 or 100 round sizes, various sizes for both pistol and rifle. And relatively inexpensive.

I then use a small range bag to put them in for range trips. Easiest way to do it for my situation.
I do too. Can they be bought in bulk?

I also like the blue boxes, a label (facing up)on the inside with cartridge/rifle makes quick sorting. I've also used zip lock freezer bags. Screw on lid plastic food containers. All get put in ammo cans, or water and dust proof storage boxes for the road. I label the rifle cases with blue painters tape with rifle/cartridge. As I often have 5 or more on pd runs.
i imagine most that have bin doing this awhile have used lots of diffferent things. i could make a list. Im using the painters tape alot lately labeling since it comes off easy. I decided i have to many mtm boxes so am using other containers some lately

I don’t know about the translucent MTM boxes. I’ve dropped them a couple of times and they broke. Now if I buy new one it’s the solid green ones, way more durable.
ive never broke an mtm box but i may have never dropped one. mabie i need to do a torture test. i think a few ive had since the 70s mabie early 80s.

I've been tempted to try these: Alpha Munitions
Alpha Ammo Box
But otherwise I use a std MTM or the one that comes with Alpha brass.
They changed to the blue new fancy one after I ordered the brown ones 4 couple a weeks ago. They are great boxes. Im sure this new blue one will be just as good.

I used to be very discerning when it came to ammo box appearance and have bought hundreds of the various boxes made by most of the companies. Being a clutz, I have dropped some and broken at least eight in the process. The hinged-lid MTM boxes rule. The J&J boxes, though are significantly less expensive than the good MTM boxes and are fine for storing on the shelf or when you need a size (like 6.5 Grendel, etc.) when the size just isn't quite right with the MTM's. If you drop a J&J full of ammo - it will likely break. Best for storage and light field use only. The Dillons and Berry's are OK.

I often load up a bunch of various ammo for high-volume squirrel hunting, and I hate stopping to put the brass back into the cases. I instead use food containers. I use plastic peanut butter jars, nut containers, pudding containers, etc. And those are free. 22-oz. pudding holds 100, 48 oz. potato salad holds 200 and the Costco 2.5 lb nut container holds 300 (all .20-P , .223, etc.) I often stick a desiccant pak in the container before putting on the shelf. I put a plastic bag in them before heading out to put the empties into, then just stuff it all back into the container before heading home. I believe they seal out moisture better than the factory-made ammo holders.

I like the green MTM Case-Gard boxes. You want the ones with mechanical hinges, not the worthless solid "lifetime hinges" that crack and break with fatigue/age/UV. I've found that you can save quite a bit buying direct from the mfgr, particularly if you buy several at once: https://mtmcase-gard.com/

I use Forney paint pens to label the boxes by cartridge (270 Win, 223 Rem, etc.) and give each box a number so I can keep track of information in my range book ("Box 6, Rounds #15-25 are a ladder-test series with the following charge weights of H4350 and all with a CBTO length of...")

30 years ago I started using Zip bags, 100 rds. per bag, label the bags, store in 50 cal. cans. Have carried these in all PD states with no problems. tried the plastic boxes and rattled to much without foam, less space with bags.

Since getting serious about rat shooting in 1968, I started using Mil-Spec military cans and plastic ammo boxes (MTM at the time). Around 1980 or thereabouts, I've found what I consider the ideal system for field use using multiple rifles in multiple calibers.

To me, Berry's boxes are the hot setup. When open the hinged top lays flat on the bench for easy removal/replacement of the fired case. Optional colors for different calibers if wanted, secure snap closure, models for about every caliber. I gave up on MTM long ago with their silly molded-in hinge that never laid flat when open; frustrating when in a hot rat patch.

All my field ammo is stored in these Berry's boxes, four 100 rnd boxes to each mil .50 cal can. I usually take one can of 400 rounds for each rifle I take to the rat patch, sometimes two cans for 800 rnds if I stay a week or longer at one of the ranches I shoot.

Simple label on each box shows all needed info:

Each .50 cal or .30 cal can gets a label showing caliber/rifle for easy reference. I have four stacks of ammo cans in the gun room and can easily pick out what's needed for any field trip.

There are many options, but after just shy of 60 years of big game, rockchuck, sage rat and pd shooting, this system has proven to me that it works. As the cans are mil-spec, they are air and water tight. In Vietnam I was convinced that when I got back to The World, these cans would be my choice for ammo storage and transport. So far, no regrets. I just returned from a ten day rat shoot, all went well, rats flew, all my ammo went bang and was dry and ready for duty when I go to the outback....just like always. ;)

As for the "rattle factor", foam works on top of the loaded ammo if wanted, but as all my ammo is in the back of the truck, I can't hear any rattle, so it's not an issue for me.
