30 BR Short Barrel Rifle for hunting

They are spendy.

Try the cheap Magpul mags too. They worked for me.

One of my Magpul mags sits just a tiny bit higher than the other.
It feeds fine, but the rear of the bolt head catches a little on the case mouth of the next cartridge. Sux.

I'm having a hard time locating the old, worn one that works so well.

The MDT BR mag works fine, I just don't need 10 rounds at a time.

Don't waist your money on a 10 twist barrel for a 30BR. Minimum would be a 17 twist. Get your money's worth and do it the way it was intended to shoot small groups and be a great killer.

Regarding the twist... you know how BR guys are. ;)
For real-deal Benchrest use, the 17-18 twists commonly used with the 30BR are perfect for the bullet lengths used for maximum accuracy. Everything is optimized for accuracy....including not having excessive Sg that high twist rates impart. Excessive twist can magnify the effect of bullet imperfections, among other things.

The 30BR is no different than any other case when it comes to twist rates....simply use a twist that matches the length of the bullets you're going to be using.

Dan Lilja's article on this is a good starting point to understanding this. Inputting you bullet length and twist info into the JBM Stability Calculator is another easy way to get an understanding of how all this works together.

Good shootin' :) -Al

I already have a 17tw 22" Krieger barrel.
I'm waiting on a 16" Proof Carbon in an 8 twist to be completed.

I built a 30BR for a hunting rifle. Plan is to use under 200 on deer and hog with 115 grain Bergers or 125 Sierra Pro Hunter if it stabilizes.
Remington single shot action, no feed problems and easy to load/unlaod going in and out of vehicles.
22” Krieger 1-17, shouldered 1.35” diameter to match receiver, 0.75” muzzle, Remington Sendero used as pattern of tracer lathe. Was turned down from a 1.45” straight blank.
Stock is orange and purple laminate Harry Lawson Cochise Thumbhole.
Needed up way heavier than I had wanted, 11 lbs.
I have only shot over hood in wind to get on paper but under 1/2”.
As Al said decide what bullet and use appropriate twist.
If you want to shoot faster use a 308.

Stock needs more sanding. Just finished enough to shoot.
Green tape is because it was leaning on wall.

I have been reading on the 30 br for a hunting rifle for a while. I've been interested, but it's not a need for me at the moment. I just got this email from forester products. Has anyone else seen this? Magazine feeding seems the only draw back.

Hey Doug,

If you hunt deer in Illinois, you know the regulations can make cartridge selection a challenge. The .30 Whitetail was developed specifically to meet those regulations—while delivering the accuracy and performance serious hunters expect.

What Is the .30 Whitetail?

The .30 Whitetail is a .30 caliber bottleneck cartridge with a 1.400" case length, designed to comply with Illinois deer hunting regulations while delivering superior ballistic performance.

Formed from 6mm BR brass that’s necked up to .30 caliber and shortened to meet legal requirements, the cartridge features a 40-degree fire-formed shoulder to increase usable case capacity.

In practical terms, it’s essentially a shortened .30 BRA, optimized for legal use and real-world hunting performance.

If you’d like to hear more about the design and development of the cartridge, we recently discussed the .30 Whitetail on our podcast.
