30 BR Short Barrel Rifle for hunting

Has anyone done anything with 14" or less barrel (knowing I need a stamp) and up to 125 gr bullets? I know there must be some XP-100 guys out there. I am curious what barrel twist you are using and powder. I was thinking of using an old 10 or 12 twist barrel and cutting it down from 14" to probably 10" to see what it does. I am going to put my suppressor on it and will be using it for deer or smaller size game. I have a 300 blackout that I run Barnes 120 TAC-TX bullets in, it's a 16" 8 twist. MV is 2300fps and it groups well. Thinking with the BR case I will gain a lot of MV and lose a few hundred FPS at the short length. Anyone have any velocity and accuracy information on a 14" or less barrel? What twist/length? Thank you in advance.

I have built a few 30 bellm xp-100s. 14" barrels. Two were 10t on 8t. One of the guys had a 13 or 14 twist. Anyways with the ones I built we shot 190 and 210gr LRAB. Not quick but that bullet opens up well at distance even when launched at 2000-2100fps.

I did a 30br 14" 14twist. Only shot the 125tnt. Pretty much only shot it in the local br match. Done well with it.

I'm waiting on a 16" 8tw Proof carbon to be completed.
It'll be set up as a rifle unless I change my mind. (New, unused action)
It will also be suppressed.

I figure it'll be fantastic with the 110-125 gr bullets, but also allow me to go subsonic too.

Thank you for the information.

I chambered a barrel for a friend on a REM Model 7, 1-17 Krieger at 18 inches. It was a old take off barrel from one of his Benchrest Rifles.

It shoots the Barns TSX 130 great, so a 1-17 should handle any 125 with no problem.

What rifle is this going in?

I don't have a plan yet. I will probably use a Remington or clone. I am just doing the research to build one. I have to also decide on what I am ordering for reamer specs, but I don't want to dilute this thread with that discussion.

I'm not going to load subsonics for it, this will mostly be used for hunting, so I want to get as much energy for the bullet/case combination with a 14" or less barrel. Just trying to get some MV numbers for that length with a similar weight bullet. 4" less barrel length will maybe be up to approximately 200 fps less in MV with the same weight bullet which in turn will be less RPM's (I haven't calculated the difference yet because I haven't found enough real data), so I was looking to see what twist rates the guys with short barrel experience were running and what results they were seeing. It's a pretty uncommon question I assume, just trying to see if I could get lucky and draw on someone else's experience.

Thank you for the reply

If you have quikload , you can mess with cartridges/barrel combo's and compare the velocities .......
I had a 6mm dilemma similar to what you are looking at and ended up doing a 6TCU over a 6BR or 6AR due to the end result being so close in velocity , but having much less unburned power exiting the muzzle ?
There are instances where less is more.

what is your powder charge in a 6TCU? I have a few 6BRA's, just curious. Hornady will probably come out with a 30 ARC right after I build a 30BR...

its pretty flexible, 24 gr and up depending.... H4198 through Varget , It seems to like Benchmark.

Ive had a 30 grendel reamer since 2011, its a pretty amazing little cartridge even in a 10 inch AR barrel.
that you can make it one pass from 7.62 x 39 is a plus. The 7mm version is no slouch either using Speer TNT's.
