Sierra 6mm 116 gr Bullets

They have only been out as testing samples so far. They were available strting last night on Sierras web site- I snagged 1k of them.

The guys from Rokslide tested 115/116/117 grain prototypes starting back in December, before Sierra settled on the 116's. They shot pretty good, and worked well on a bunch of game animals too.

I'll be waiting for your range reports

Reading on Sierra’s website it does not give a recommended twist for this bullet? For the guys/gals who were able to sample and test them, did they recommend a 8 or 7 twist? Curious what cartridges you tested them in as well.

I shoot Berger 115 grain bullets for my Ram load in a 6BR, so close enough to the new 116 SMK.

I use 1:7.5 twist barrels and it gives me good stabilization for the 115. I know some that opt for a 1:7 twist barrel for the same bullet.

I guess if you're really pumping them out at a fast speed you might get away with a 1:8 but I wouldn't want to risk the cost of a barrel on it.

The Sierra 110gr SMK's says it requires a 1;7 twist, thats what I shoot them with. I would imagine the 116gr TMK would take the same at least.

The 115 Dtac still has a higher advertised BC of .620

What the?
What is Sierra thinking?
A tipped bullet is nice but
When is someone going to up the BC ?

I call Sierra’s 116 gr .609 BC
and raise them to a
120 gr .650 BC

115 DTAC's shoot very well out of my 6 Creedmoor 7.5 twist barrel
115 DTACS and 115 Bergers Shoot very well out of my Krieger 8 twist / 6x284 also
my Stability factor is approx 1.42 with Dtacs
---
Anyone know the OAL of these new 116 TMK's ?

8 twist hits 300k spin at 3500 fps. I'm guessing you are right about at max spin. Honestly, you wouldn't want to go any faster.

I was hoping for a 120 as well.
The BC on the Dtac is .292 G7 and .591 G1 in Applied balistics bullet library. From what I have seen the .609 is legit on the 116 TMK they are the same length as the Dtac's.
For what it's worth the guys I know testing the 116's have had no trouble with 8 twist barrels. I'll be shooting them this week in a 6-7PRC with a 7 1/2 twist.

Photo is a 115 Dtac D.C. NR and a 116 TMK

You are correct sir, with my velocity I could not spin any faster
I am right at the edge of whats possible
Go faster - Blow up bullets
Spin Faster - Blow up Bullets
3400 fps with Dtacs is right about where the limit is, when I pushed faster toward 3500 they did survive but I started getting erratic groups then or a 1/5 erratic flyer. likely compromising the jackets but I still didnt see blow-ups yet
200 fps aint nothing to cry about when you're already above 3000 fps right?
---
I can only use a couple Mfgr's bullets
---
I think I have found 270,000 rpm is a happy place for most 6mm bullets
---
I can't pull the recent article I read about some F Class guys actually build their rifles to approx
an SG stability factor of about 1.4, (I believe that was in a 7mm/284 build though) which still provides superb accuracy for 1000 yds
(my last computer went down and so much info I had saved is lost ....urgh)
I have also found this SG to work very well with my gun
Many seem to place too much emphasis on trying to achieve as much SG as possible
I am not against over spinning a bullet but
when we're right on the ragged edge of diminished returns for doing so
pulling back and accepting less SG, is like a cheat code still providing desired accuracy
---
I keep "wanting" to see if I can eek out an extra inch accuracy at 600 yds by going higher in SG but...
Physcis wont allow it, and there's no Solids I see available that are heavy
so in a way I'm maxxed out
In weight class, speed, and spin
