Can you use a telescope for a spotting scope?

I'm a BLM shooter for the most part and don't really care what it looks like size wise. The price on spotting scopes new and used is nuts. Maybe the glass isn't good enough for 600 yard 6mm spotting. I don't know.

Just curious.
A telescope does not have erector lenses or prism, so the image will be upside down and left the right. It will also be quite dark unless the objective lens is bigger than the ones I have seen on cheaper telescopes.

Spotting scopes are generally sealed against weather, while telescopes are not; this may or may not be a factor for your use. In my experience the cost of spotting scopes and telescopes of comparable optical quality are similar. A spotting scope will usually be easier to transport and set up.

What are you shooting.... steel or are you trying to see groups on a target? If you are shooting steel you can get one of those hit flashers, Horndy makes some now I believe that are a cheap price. If you are shooting at targets and trying to see holes and groups I would put my money towards a target cam system, they have built in apps that record the groups and calculate size.

I think that is what FX77 was trying to tell me and I was only kinda getting it. Thanks!

I'm leaning towards a drone. I can land it off to the side and hopefully avoid splash. Plus, I can look around for ATV, hikers and livestock. Multi-purpose for exploring too.

how does shooting on blm land work? can you just go out there and shoot where ever you want? i know there are many desolate places in the US where it wouldnt hurt anything. hope it works out for you. thanks

Groups.

Thank you for all the responses. Suggestions with regard to various electronics, drones, spotters and super high-power scopes deserve additional research and consideration. Thanks again for the information.

It is not automatically a free for all. The land is usually being worked by a ranch, usually cattle out here. In a perfect world you'd call the manager and find out if there is a place you can shoot/hunt/camp/fish. Most don't do that and can end up at odds with the managers.

These days there are a ton of folks looking for free camping so there are more restrictions being placed on a lot of the land to prevent abuses. Many established camp areas are being marked for use and other areas blocked from use.

When I used to hunt there were a couple prime areas run by the Coors company (they had a strain of Angus cattle on the range). The ranch manager was a nice guy and he'd let me know where the deer or elk were at that time of year and where a good place to camp was. One year he stopped by to let me know a good spot to hunt from. He was right :)

Forget that question
Can you use a Telecope for a SCOPE!!!
thats what I want
---
An Objective big enough it doesnt start going dark when turned up past 24x or 36x or 45x
---
Why not changeable Objectives like a Camera?

I answered earlier that telescopes do not have erector lenses or prisms; the picture will be upside down and left to right. The principle of optics still apply: the higher the magnification the larger the required. But beyond that here are a few more things to consider:

No zoom mechanism in a telescope. Astronomers don't want the complexity of zoom lenses, and most telescopes do not have zoom lenses. They have interchangeable eyepieces with differing magnification. You swap out the eyepiece to get a different magnification. Astronomers are more interested in exact magnification with which they can make measurements and having less lenses means higher light transmission.

Horrible eye relief. Telescopes are not designed as ad-hoc terrestrial observation optics. You mount them on big-ash tripods and equatorial mounts and what not.

Telescopes are designed to be used at night looking at VERY far away places with minimal light. They will have more internal reflection and may not be well sealed.
