Winter survivors,in a coyote free zone.

I've been spotting elk, turkey and deer on the gaslines in the state forrest's in PA.

I've seen multiple times elk and deer on the gasline and have a bear come out. Elk, deer and turkeys stay out, but give the bear a fairly wide berth.

Coyote comes out and real quick, the only thing in sight is the coyote.

And when they come out here the only thing in sight is my dot on his vitals.

Went out last night across the road to try and call in a coyote. Pasture and field with small woods/fence rows. Standing in one spot, scanning w/ thermal I counted 5 skunks and over a dozen raccoons. Coyotes (and now bobcats) are very prevalent, but we hardly ever see broods of Turkey that survive. Used to see multiple hens w/ 10 plus chicks just driving the local roads in a summer a now IF I see even one, there’s only 2-3 chicks with her. This is in an entire summer. Two months ago I scanned th 30 acre cornfield across the road from the house (still standing) and estimated 20 plus raccoons in there.

I do think coyotes are having an affect, but there’s a lot of guys getting into coyote hunting lately and I know of nobody that’s still trapping dry land or running coonhounds anymore. Farmer that owns across the road has told me to walk around and clean them up, and next fall I’m going to do just that with a suppressed 22 and night vision/thermal.

Spot on. Coyotes take all the blame, but the nest raiders are out of control. I have had a few traps out on my place the last month and have caught 50 coon, 10 or 11 skunks, probably 15 or 20 opossum. I haven't yet trapped near the main creek or one other area of my place. Frost is coming out of the ground now and when it gets right I'm going after more. Betting I'll get at least 75 coon total, probably more. I see skunks sometimes going to and fro to my bow stands in the dark but had no idea that there were so many here. And yes, now seeing Bobcats on the trail cams. At my age I don't want to spend the $$ for a good thermal but it sure would be fun.

Just get a ‘decent’ thermal monocular, 12-1500 bucks, and a DNT Zulus 3-12 for the rifle. Heck, just a kill light on the rifle will work great, the thermal scanner would be the first thing I’d buy.
