Rusty chamber pics . How bad is it ?

Thay said a good solvent and start brushing . Long as no hard extraction, and accuracy holds dont worry bout it lol

This is a first for me !!
You can kinda see it . Its a factory barrel on a ruger American gen 1 .
I do have this brush , also what size mops fit a 223 and 308 chamber ?

All too common minor surface rust. It'll clean right up with steel wool and a light oil.
The old Remington semi-auto hunting rifles were terrible about rust in the chambers. They opened with some remaining pressure, so carbon etc built up in the chambers. And since they were difficult to get at the chamber for cleaning, they commonly just never got cleaned. I've seen them pitted enough to affect extraction. It takes a more aggressive approach to fix it but it's just pulling the bbl and polishing the chamber with sandpaper or flex hone.

Yours is nothing like those and have no reason to worry about using steel wool to clean it up.

I don't use a mop. I just use an old worn out brush and wrap steel wool around it. Works like a champ and probably better than a mop anyway.

This is wayyy easy to do. Don't over think it. Just use a little caution and stay out of the throat area is all. And really, even that ain't gonna ruin a bbl without being pretty aggressive. The steel wool that most are recommending is 0000(4 zeroes) but the triple ought won't hurt the chamber. It's just a bit more course if you use it to scrub the exterior of a blued firearm with. Again, this is very easy. It won't take even 5 seconds

0000 is common. Hardware stores, Home Depot etc.
That’s FOUR 0’s not 5. Some previous post some guy claimed he had 5 0’’s. Don’t think 5 ever existed.
4 0 will do you fine

You can cut a gun cleaning wipe into strips and wrap around the chamber brush, probably will clean it up in a few passes. Neck/throat/bore will need prevention measures also.

I’ll add that you need to do a good cleaning after using the steel wool. It tends to leave little bits of itself behind.

A magnet will grab those steel hairs also

I’m not doubting you but when I saw that post I did some looking as I have never seen it. Fancy names and lots of ‘extra extra’ but I was looking for it to be marked on the bag with 5 0’s.
I want some if it does exist. Not for cleaning rust but for polishing.

Maybe. But I’ve been around awhile and I’ve never seen it or heard of 5 0’s .

5 0's would be #00000

4 0's would be #0000

It might exist, but I personally have never seen #00000 steel wool.

#0000 is readily available at most any retail location that has finishing supplies for woodworking.

So my old faithful deer gun , first gen ruger american 308 has some rust in the chamber !! This has never happend on any on my guns so not sure what to do . Its light rust nothing bad but still not sure what to to ...
Ill try get a pic when home ..
Should I try find a brush that fits the chamber to get it out then oil it with a mop? Guess thats all that can be done ?

No . No muzzle device at all

You might be surprised how well that green Scotch Brite works on light rust wrapped around a small bronze brush with solvent.
