20 VT possible new hornady factory round?

It's sad to see all the Remington bashing.
Anyone questioning why Remington didn’t market or support a particular new cartridge should also understand Remington was paying 300% more on lawyers and lawsuit fees and claims than they were on marketing or development for the last 30 years of their existence. It’s awfully hard to put 100% in on new products when your being bleed out financially on lawsuits aimed at trying to bankrupt you.

Sadly, when the anti-gun folks put Hornady and other manufactures in their sites next, you might very well see the same results to their product support.

"The Remington Shotgun Barrel Class Action
In 1995, Remington et al entered into a settlement of class action claims brought by owners of certain Remington 12-gauge shotguns including: Remington 12-gauge Model 870, 1200, 11-87, 3200, and Sportsman 58, 12-A or 12-P shotguns. The action named all of these models manufactured between 1960 and June 1995. This was substantially all shotguns made by Remington during those 35 years. The shotgun liability suit was filed against the Remington Arms Company, Inc., E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, and Sporting Goods Properties, Inc., the du Pont subsidiary formerly known as Remington. The complaint alleged that the type of steel formerly used for the barrels of these shotguns (American Iron and Steel Institute C-1140 modified steel) constituted a manufacturing defect that could and had resulted in the explosion of the barrel in use.
In 1997, the Court approved payments to more than 477,000 class members, who
owned more than 750,000 eligible shotguns. It was paid out of a 31.5 million dollar fund established to meet current and future claims."

“Remington Arms will pay $73 million to the families of five adults and four children killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, the families said on Tuesday, the first time a gunmaker has been held responsible for a mass shooting in the United States.

Twenty students and six adults were killed on Dec. 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, by gunman Adam Lanza, who used a Remington Bushmaster AR-15 rifle to shoot his way into the Sandy Hook Elementary School after killing his mother at home.

Remington Arms will pay $73 million to the families and release all the discovery and disposition material to the public. The settlement will be paid through insurance policies, lawyers for the families said in a statement.”
-------------------------------------------

“ A Delaware jury awarded $9 million to the family of Eugene Schoepke, an Illinois hunter who died from mesothelioma in 2022. The lawsuit argued companies added asbestos to Remington and DuPont shotgun shells in the 1960s and failed to warn consumers, putting the public at risk.

Schoepke hunted for many years and repeatedly used these asbestos-containing shotgun shells for decades. Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma. Medical experts testified that every time he fired the shells, asbestos fibers entered the air. “

“According to Remington’s court filings, the Remington defective trigger class action settlement will cover upwards of 7 million individual firearms.

Qualifying owners of Remington rifles that use an allegedly defective trigger connector will be eligible to have those rifles retrofitted with the newer X-Mark Pro trigger mechanism at no cost to them.

Owners who have already had their Walker mechanism replaced with an X-Mark Pro can seek partial or full reimbursement of the replacement cost.”

And the list goes on and on……..

The 22-204, I've been shooting one since 204 brass came out your right very close to the 222 Rem Mag AI, BUT no fire forming or custom dies.

This is spot on. They tweaked the ppc and grendel and called it arc. Copied the henderson trimmer and put their name on it. As for supporting their stuff, they came out with the RCMs but they flopped due to poor marketing. They do an annual run of brass. they necked down the 300 rcm, called it the 6.5 prc and marketed it as the next great thing. The creedmoor is not much more than a 250ai with a 30° shoulder and shoulder moved slightly forward and raised pressures. Its about marketing, marketing, marketing
I could say that my Gracy was copied by everyone I guess. The Henderson does nothing that the Gracy won't do. When Remington "copied" the .250 Savage did everyone throw a fit, because it was just a copy? I think what most forget is that, 99% of the people shooting want to go to their favorite sporting goods store and buy a rifle and ammo, not buy a $300 reamer and HS gauge, a $500 barrel and pay a gunsmith $400 to chamber and install on a $800 rifle. If all the new rounds were not coming out, I'm guessing that 95% of the firearms industry would not exist.

If hornady did bring out a new 20, I would imagine it would be more like a 20 arc. Short fat case. Long heavy for caliber bullets. Maybe a 50 gr ELD-VT. Fast twist. If you watch their podcast, it is clear they are not going to be making any new cartridges that dont follow those "modern cartridge design" principles.

Just in general, coyote hunting has become very popular, and small varmints like PD hunting are in decline. I will be shocked if they release anything geared towards PDs.

I built a 20 VarTarg on a Rem M700 VSSF 17FB after I pulled the 17FB bbl and sent it to one of my favorite custom barrel makers so they could copy the contour on a 20 cal blank with the same profile as the fluted Rem bbl, only without the fluting. That little 700 action that Rem made to work with the 17FB worked great with the 20VT. But I sold it because of the lack of brass 15yrs ago, and there were no decent dog towns around within easy driving distance. Now I want another 20VT, so went looking around at online auction sites for one of those same M700 CDL 17FB rifles, and at least so far, haven't found anything similar for under $1900. I've got a Howa mini in 20 Tactical that's got plenty of shank length to allow me to set it back and chamber for 20VT, but those plastic Howa mags don't want to feed any of the leftover VT ammo I tried in it. I bought a few of the custom DBMs that accept CZ527 mags, but I kinda doubt it'll feed 100% reliably unless I could find a couple of the 221 mags that CZ made for awhile.

So, a few months ago, I bought a Sako DeLuxe L461 in 222 online that's got gorgeous wood, but the bbl was pitted from breech to muzzle, and really didn't shoot worth a hoot with my 222 handloads. So pulled that bbl and sent it off to another favorite cut rifled barrel maker to have them copy the profile on a 20 cal blank with 1-10tw, intending to put it on this pretty little L461. I did a 221 FB bbl on a customer's Sako L461 several years ago, and he told me that it runs great out of the integral box magazine - and that's what I'm hoping to see when I finally get the new 20 cal blank and get it chambered with my VT reamer...if I can find someone here that's making 20VT brass out of LC 5.56...

Well flatlander, your quest has ended. Friend Doug here, aka TheCZKid is your huckelberry.

Doug makes excellent VT brass from LC brass, neck turned and ready for loading. He's got a few posts here showing his formed brass, and the response from users has been very positive. He usually has an inventory of brass ready to ship. Highly recommended.

I thought it was TheCZKid who has been making VT brass - thanks Rick for confirming that!

I bought a 500ct box of Rem 221FB brass from Midway when I got started on the M700 CDL VT project, and was very disappointed in the quality, as a good 10-15% of it had very shallow primer pockets, and I had to run carbide primer pocket cleaner/cutter to get them deep enough to seat flush. I always wondered if doing so left the bottom of the primer pocket thinner than normal, but never got around to sectioning one of those cases & one with a deeper pocket to see how they compared.

Whatever - I'll be sending a PM to Doug tomorrow.
