K Hornet

White Eagle

Silver $$ Contributor
Anybody shoot one?
Took mine out for a test run today to check the scope and get ready for the coyote hunting this week
Anyone else use a K for coyote's?

I've got a T C Contender Carbine with a .22K Hornet 20" barrel.
Leupold on top-Fred Smith made the barrel for himself then the TCA raffled
it off and I won it for $5.00. Extremely accurate.

40g Speer spire points are excellent for coyotes. IN addition, the ogive design of this bullet allows the bullet seated to touch the lands at magazine length.

Mine is a CZ 527
yes the Calhoon 42 gr is outstanding bullet
have you tried any of the lighter one's in your Hornet or K?
The 19 Calhoon or Badger would be fun. I used to have a 19-223 that was a blast as well

I also tried the 40vmax and like it too. I also shoot the 19 Calhoon and 19-223 and enjoy those with James bullets too. Sometimes I think I don't need all the choices I have but then I remember how much fun they all are and just put that craziness out of my mind. The Hornet based cartridges perform very well for their size.

For those who like to get more with less, I've always thought the Hornet and K Hornet cartridges are the cat's meow. I used to day dream of a 150 yd squirrel rifle for shooting them in Dec and Jan, and the Hornet was the cartridge I dreamed about using. I never ended up getting one of them because I developed some reduced loads for my 223 that take me all the way down to 22 WMR levels. Those loads are my preference for dispatching critters in the back yard (I live on the edge of a small town). I also enjoy using them out west for prairie dogs when we're walking and shooting. I take them out to 200 yds, but they do better within 175 yds. If I had one, I wouldn't hesitate to use it for coyotes at modest distances. Cheaper to shoot (reloads) than a 22wmr, more velocity/better trajectory with minimal increase in noise, lots of projectile choices (assuming a 224 barrel), and good accuracy. IMHO they are highly versatile 22 cal hunting cartridges.

Well, I might as well chime in.....Mine is a single shot Savage Model 40. Also rechambered from 22 Hornet to K Hornet. I really love this rifle. Limited to a single shot, but who needs more than one shot, right? lol. Anyway, I have shot coon with mine, but not a coyote yet. But wouldn't hesitate to give it a try. I shoot the 40 gr. vmax in my loads. Good groups, and just fun to shoot.

LOVE the K-Hornet!
I've had four, my current K is on a 1885 Browning Low Wall that gets used for both rockchucks and sage rats here in Orygun.

Using the old Nosler 45gr Solid Base Hornet bullet and A1680, it's like a 250 yard death-ray on the rats. I laid in a few thou' when I learned they were to be discontinued (why oh why do they DO that?).

As far as accuracy is concerned, only floating the forend and a trigger job was needed to attain nirvana.

Easy to load for, anneal after fireforming and you're good to go.

Fun in the rat patch with the little K-Hornet....always a pleaser.

Longer case life, zero recoil, miserly on powder and accurate. What more could a guy ask for?

Lordy, Rick! Did you leave any for the next guy!! lol. You have a sweet little rifle there. Love it.

Actually, that was a private ranch I had exclusive shooting permission, so I was the "next guy".

The landowner had me come out twice a year to reduce the ground squirrel population, and of course I was always glad to be of assistance. And 'yes' it sure is a sweet little rifle, here to stay.

What do you figure your average shooting distance will be? I've shot coyotes with not only my .17 Hornet - but also my .17 HMR. Shot placement is key. You just don't have the degree of shock transfer as compared to a .20 or a .223-sized gun. Well-aimed vitals shot inside 200 yards "usually" works. Those coyotes are tough when not hit well with these small calibers. I've lost more than a few. A month ago, I had one get up and run off when whacked in the side with a 58 V-Max out of my .243 Win.!!! That doesn't happen much.....
