Thinking of a new barrel

I am torn between a 222 Rem and a 223 Rem. I am a considering a lot of angles and can't make up my mind. Currently I am shooting mostly 223, but have an older 222 that is also lots of fun . Both barrels have lots of use and
are showing their age in terms of accuracy beginning to fade. The 222 is slow twist and shoots bullets in the 52 or 53 Gr range while the 223 is 8twist and shoots 69 or 77Gr. I am leaning mostly to 222. I have lots of time to sort this out. In terms of cost the 222 would be a little cheaper to shoot.

My vote would be 222 lots of fun great accuracy lots of powder choices.

I've never shot 222 - have gone through a little over 100K 223. But, from what I've heard about triple deuce, I'd go with that if you enjoy it.

The .222 Rem is One of the inheritently ( SP ) Accurate, Cartridge designs and was, the "Top Dog" in 100-200 yd. BR before, the .22PPC came around. Good Powder amount and a Sweet,.. LONG Neck !
Most .222's shoot, Real Well,.. try a 1-12 twist barrel, maybe ?

I had both and reloaded for both.

The 222 Rem is one of the greatest cartridges ever designed. If the use is primarily a range rifle, the 222 would be a good choice assuming you can easily still get virgin brass.

If the use is for hunting, I would opt for the 223 Rem to obtain the increase in velocity. Regardless, I don't think you can go wrong with either one in a quality rifle.

I got a minty 660 mowhawk in 222 from dad. I should get it out more often!

I was reading the other day in one of my old Sierra manuals
A friend asked Mike Walker what he considered the most accurate benchrest cartridge
his reply was a 6x47 (222 Rem Mag necked up to 6mm)

Starline is making new 222 Rem brass, I like it just as much as my Lapua 222 brass.

I use my 222s for coyote hunting.

For varmints and targets custom Stevens 200, Shilen barrel, SSS comp trigger, Boyde thumbhole stock, Sightron S-tac 3-16.

223 works ok, just not a favorite.

If you're gonna replace both barrels, do another .222. Make the other one a .223AI, a great cartridge..... fireforming is really just shooting loads that are faster and just as accurate as a std 223, formed loads are even faster and also at least as accurate. A win-win.. .

As was posted, Starline sells .222 brass & their brass is good quality. But it's no big deal to take abundant .223 cases & size/trim them into .222's using a trim die.

Love my deuce. It was my pops. I think it’s appropriately a 1959 model 722. He shot the barrel out of it. I set it out and hopefully it’s gonna come back a shooter. Like to shoot it with the 6ppc crowd. Putting a hart 14 twist barrel on it.

My varmint gun Anschutz 1740 in 222. One for the range and one for the field. What’s not to love about the Duece??
