Best lab scale

Seeing how others have my annoying creedmoor drift problem I googled and found it is common. I emailed creedmoor sports. We'll see what they say. Maybe its a bad batch or maybe they have since corrected it.

It's inherent in the technology - all strain gage scales do it. It's less of a problem with run-of-the-mill scales that weigh to 0.1 gr, but it will drive you crazy when attempting to be more precise.

The smart folks here have explained on a few occasions the difference between strain gage scales and Magnetic Force Restoration scales.

This from Google AI - For high-precision applications like laboratory, precision filling, or high-capacity rugged environments, upgrading from a strain gauge to a SAW or MFR scale is generally recommended for superior results.

Good luck. I did the same thing. I emailed them a long inquiry about the scale, and the drifting tare weight, and all my concerns about it not being accurate because the thing seems to drift. How I can see the weight of the pan fluctuate, yet it wants to hold zero too.

After a couple days I got a response and I’ll quote it right here. I still have the email:

“Please give us a call at your convenience and ask to speak with Technical Support. We’re here this week Monday through Wednesday from 9:00am to 5:00pm CST and will be here next week Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm CST at 800-273-3366.

So of course I called them and asked for technical support. I can’t recall exactly how the conversation went but I remember it lasting about 45 seconds and I’m fairly sure the guy I spoke with was no more than 22yrs old. It was basically something to the affect of, “Does it power up? Will it calibrate? Does it weigh stuff? It’s fine. Bye”.

They already responded and are sending a new scale with a return label. Maybe they had enough complaints that they are replacing them now? Curious to see if it still does it due to the type of scale. If so, I might have to ebay the thing and get the fx120i eventually. Not sure I care since I don't shoot the hornet anymore. It simply doesn't matter in a creedmoor or SAUM size case unless you compete.

Well that’s really nice that they’re doing that. Be sure to report back. My suspicion is that it will do exactly the same thing, as those issues are typically inherent in strain gauge type scales. Hopefully the new one will work for you.

Spend the extra $95 and get the FX120i

Out of all the things I've got over the years this is the one purchase I've thought from day one it was well worth the spend. I can't say that about most of what we buy for this sport. CE also is excellent to work with and shipping is quick n painless, highly recommend getting from them.

Anyone heard of this?? A&D FX-123 Just recently popped up on CE Products website. I wonder if A&D is going to phase out the “FXi” balances and this is the new breed?

Just curious. The EJ series scales seem interesting and A&D says they use a load cell that is not strain gage based. What do they use and why is it not as capable as the FX series?

They may SAY that but I’m pretty sure that’s corporate speak. They probably use a different term to define it, but as far as I know the EJ series IS a standard “strain gauge” type load cell, it is not magnetic force restoration, as in the FXi series.

The performance “advantages” over the FX-120i, with the EJ-54D2 for example, would be that it’s readable down to .003gn compared to .02gn (FX). So you could say it’s got close to 10X the “resolution” of the FX-120i. The EJ series are also smaller and lighter. I think they may even take batteries (could be wrong on that). I also sort of like the design of the draft shield on the EJ. It’s not a bad little scale, and I’d probably choose one over a Creedmoor TRX-925. However, for the price (vs the FX-120i), there are some distinct disadvantages. The benefits of a magnetic force restoration type load cell over a common strain gauge cannot be understated. Also, the response time of the FX-120i, and its compatibility with several brands of tricklers (AT, ST, IP etc), makes the choice between the two somewhat of a “no-brainer” lol. It’s literally only a $45 price difference on CE Products, and for that paltry amount you gain a TON of performance (with the FX) over the EJ series (IMO).

The FX-123 is 0.001 gram resolution (0.015 gn), the same as the FX-120i.

The big question is whether the communication protocols and serial board dimensions are the same; i.e., is it compatible with the tricklers. The web page says "Fully compatible and programmed to work seamlessly with all AutoTrickler products" but I'd like verification from Adam that there are no gremlins lurking.

I just asked the question on ebay. Got this reply:

I asked the same question on CE Products site as well. I imagine they’ll reply after the weekend. Pretty Interesting though, if this is true. I’ll see if I can get A&D to confirm this. If this is in fact the case, I almost want to snag one and compare it to the FX-120i.

Be damned careful buying a scale from CE products. The sale price is only to cover some of the tarrif you will end up paying. Also, they screwed up some paper work for something never shipped which had my name and address on it. Got a tarrif bill for it. They told me to not worry about it, it was a mistaken shipping bill. SO, now I have a bill collector expecting me to pay for the tarrif bill. Is it going to be worth the hassle for $150 to try to get it straightened out??? Probably not and just pay the damn bill. Really pisses me of...

I'm expecting to receive an FX300i as soon as UPS can recover from the winter storm. It's supposed to be the same as the FX120i with more weight capacity. Does anyone have experience with this scale?

I have an FX-300iN which is the same scale you’re talking about expect “NTEP” version. That just means a it’s a “legal for trade” designation, and these scales are typically what you find in cannabis shops lol. I got a steal of a deal on it on ebay about a month ago. $250 shipped and it’s like brand new! Yes the FX-300i is exactly like the FX-120i. The only difference is the MAX weight is higher on the 300i. Which technically makes it a better unit in my opinion. If you ever wind up with an N (NTEP) version, or you find a deal you can’t pass up. Don’t be discouraged, even though they’re typically “locked” in NTEP mode so you can’t calibrate, switch units to grains, or use practically any of the menu functions at all. There’s a simple procedure (series of weird button presses etc) to get the scale into “standard A&D mode” and after that it behaves exactly like every other FXi scale!

How long ago was that? I ask because I bought an FX-120i from them a month ago and I paid ZERO tariff. I believe it’s even explained on the website. They only “export” the shipments to the US on certain days. So essentially they’re lumping multiple orders all together under one single export at a time saving their customers potential huge tariff costs.
