Jack Neary barrel cleaning video

I just found out that my Butch`s Bore Shine was leaving the barrel dry after cleaning. That could be the reason I struggled with the tuning of the last one. 6BR SRBR
He said, he adds a little transmission fluid to his, to lubricate the bore after cleaning.
Did I miss anything?

I have a new Bartlein with less then 100 shots, and want to keep it shooting like it`s suppose to.
I would be thankful for any and all help. Thanks

I use the Sinclair solvent bottles for my cleaning. How much transmission fluid should I add?
Also, I believe he said, he mixes Iosso with a solvent to clean the first few inches.

How much of each in the little bottles?

Thanks

I don't know who Jack is, but man that sounds like a weird idea. ATF has all kinds of additives in it that don't serve any conceivable purpose in a barrel. I don't have any reason to think any of them are harmful, but given pretty much every one of us almost certainly has better options (say, I dunno, plain old gun oil maybe?) sitting on our benches already, why use ATF?

Why not just clean the barrel however you want and then run a patch through it with a few drops of plain old boring gun oil on it?

Neary's a great BR shooter but lubricating the barrel is something unusual. A personal quirk. After the first shot it would be burned out anyway.????

Other hall of fame shooters and world champions use the speedy method which he demonstrates in an Eric Cortina video on youtube. I use that because it just seems easy to me. Certainly there are more ways and obviously how Jack does it also works. Heck, lou murdica uses a drill. Im tempted to switch to a drill since I recently tore my rotator cuff.

Ive seen plain ole gun oil dry out and turn to lacquer that was tough to get off. Rem oil is one that comes to mind.

How long are you leaving it in there? I've never had Butch's dry up between relays. Mine is also mixed with Kroil. It's basically a variation of a method Jim Borden used. 2/3rds Shooters Choice with 1/3rd Kroil. I just use Butch's and it has worked very well for me for a long time.

Your fine, Butches is oil based. It will leave a film. I have never added anything to the bore after cleaning. But I do prefer oil based solvents. If using a water based solvent I would follow with a patch of oil and then a couple dry patches. Im partial to the Montana extreme products and they make a bore oil that works well. Not necessary if you use their solvents in my experience. One tip I will give you about the oil based ammonia type solvents is use a separate solvent bottle to work out of. Just pour an ounce into it and keep the main bottle sealed. The solvents evaporate and weaken the strength if you work out of the main bottle too much.

I use colloidal graphite in an oil solution as my final patch. The CB shot is within group and the ES loss is less than with a dry bore.

You may have heard of Ed's Red. It is a good bore cleaner and contains ATF.

CONTENTS: Ed's Red Bore Cleaner

1 part Dexron ATF, GM Spec. D-20265 or later.

1 part Kerosene - deodorized, K1

1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits, aka "Stoddard Solvent" or "Varsol"

CAS #64741-49-9, or substitute "Stoddard Solvent", CAS #8052-41-3, or equivalent.

1 part Acetone, CAS #67-64-1.

(Optional 1 lb. of Lanolin, Anhydrous, USP per gallon, or OK to substitute Lanolin, Modified, Topical Lubricant, from the drug store)

MIXING INSTRUCTIONS:

Mix outdoors, in good ventilation. Use a clean 1 gallon metal, chemical-resistant, heavy gage PET or PVC plastic container. NFPA approved plastic gasoline storage containers are OK. Do NOT use HDPE, which is permeable, because the acetone will slowly evaporate. Acetone in ER will attack HDPE over time, causing the container to collapse, making a heck of a mess!

Add the ATF first. Use the empty container to measure the other container to measure the other components, so that it is thoroughly rinsed. If you incorporate the lanolin into the mixture, melt this carefully in a double boiler, taking precautions against fire. Pour the melted lanolin it into a larger container, rinsing the lanolin container with the bore cleaner mix, and stirring until it is all dissolved. I recommend diverting up to 4 ozs. per quart of the 50-50 ATF/kerosene mix to use as "ER-compatible" gun oil. This can be done without impairing the effectiveness of the remaining mix.
