Mirage shields

I like to shoot in winter because I get the range all to myself, but barrel mirage is a real pain. I couldn't afford the fancy carbon fiber stuff the rich guys use so I bought one that resembles a Venetian blind slat. My question is, since it is curved and not flat. Which side goes towards the barrel? The concave or convex side? Sorry for such a dumb question.

Convex is technically correct. I prefer concave in practical use with velcro to keep in in place. For winter shooting with a scope the tube that attaches to scope works the best in my experience.

Some scopes have light weight plastic tubes that use an adapter to attach to the front of the scope. The tube extends from the front of the scope for the entire length of the barrel and can be trimmed to the length needed. Think of the safety tubes they would put over the 4 foot fluorescent bulbs.
