Rear bag adjustment with Protektor

Wondering how folks that have a Protektor rear bag adjust for elevation…. I get the impression that they are firm and you can’t squeeze? Looking at a flat top for my bag rider. Thanks!

I do my own bag filling, so I can have any degree of hardness I want. Generally, if your stock does not have an angle on the butt, you will have to use the rest to adjust for elevation. Protektor makes bags that are primarily designed to be used with a rest that handles the adjustments, and those more suitable for bag squeezing. Typically a bag squeezer will want an angled stock so that he can make elevation adjustments more easily.

Agree. It's best to leave the rear bag alone once the proper position is established and only adjust with the front rest.

Folks, have you never heard of bag squeezers? Tony Boyer shot his way into the hall of fame shooting free recoil, squeezing his rear bag, until he got arthritis in his left hand and switched to a Farley. You may have heard of Jack Neary. He is another prominent bag squeezer.

I just looked at Protektor website today and they have flat mats made specifically for raising a rear bag. The prices on most of the items were better than the Midway sale from what I saw.

I have been using a Protektor rear bag since 2010 with Sinclair Gen 3 F-class bipods.
Makes for a really solid and stable set up.

The Protektor bag has a slightly sloping top so after I get the rifle set for height on the bipod, I can make minor elevation adjustments by sliding the stock back or forward slightly to get the perfect vertical alignment. If you stock base is slightly sloped, you can adjust it even more easily that way as well.

Seems to work for me.
With that set up, my new 26-inch Shilen Select Match 416R SS barrel on my Savage 12 FV .223 frame with an MDT LSS Gen1 chassis is averaging 0.217 5 round groups at 100 yards for 408 groups with 19 different bullets from 60 to 90 grains.
Best bullet results are under 0.200 inches and I have recorded 31.8% of my groups at under 0.200 inches.

From mark and sam in Australia. I am seeing ELR videos with people using something similar. I would look into that one first. This one works good but the adjustment mechanism isn't very smooth. It could be improved on.

The adjustable rear bag supports are nice, but, are not allowed in a lot of competition classes.

I have a small Protektor for the rear (as in the pic above). When I use it with a bipod I use 'shims' under it for the gross changes in elevation. They are sheets of 1/4" ply cut to the size of the bag bottom. Just slide one or more in until I am close. Fine adjustment I slide the rifle forward or back (angled stock bottom).

I shoot a lot with various bipods. Always use the rear back for final adjustments. Never an issue as I always pinch in a similar fashion from shot to shot. This included a brief stink in short range benchrest.

Get a proper front rest or the shade tree top on a Non adjustable one and make your adjustment there.
I only shoot competitions so this may not apply to you.
The rear bag is solid support for my application....squezzin optional...lol

I've never used a bipod, but it looks like an unattached adjustable front rest like a Hart pedestal would work better. For those who have used both, what do you think?

Shooting on ground can be a pain at times. I have SEB Mini and a Protector Rear bag and Spacers for that Bag.
Not all Firing Points are equal.......... Some are up Hill Some are down Hill .
tiring to stay some what level can be a task ?

I have come across rear bags with a 3/4" or more of Plywood Screwed and Glued to the bottom.

Complicated by the range. Our 1000yd has the shooting positions on a rise. 100-400 is downhill. 500-700 is about level. 800-1000 is uphill. The little Protektor bag I have rests on a block of 2x6 when I am using the Cabela's bench rest on 'level' targets. I still have to add some more 'shims' to shoot the 100yd berm.

I keep thinking of building and adjustable rear rest.

Is there anything in the rules that prevents an 'adjustable' rudder? Like an adjustable cheek rest.

Yes. It's a no no.

Depends on what is supporting the front of the rifle, and consequently how much you need to adjust between shots.

Front rest is a Caldwell Rock, back is just a sandbag. I can adjust the front to get pretty close but seems to be precise I have to squeeze rear bag, maybe because the rear is so soft. Are the Protektor bags you buy prefilled too tight to squeeze at all? Do you get all of your adjustments using the front?
